Underwater Rover…REPLY

Mike:

I’m not selling (or even really “pushing”) underwater drones, but I was a certified scuba diver in my youth and did much of it in New England rather than Caribbean waters. Also, I was a professional photographer for many years and have shot a lot of film/video.

This latest FIFISH V6 Underwater drone from B&H Photo in NYC is notable for a number of reasons (…excellent 4K video and 12 MP stills, VR goggles and a good controller, 326’ depth/cord range, 4+ hour running time, and perhaps most important, two 2000 lumen lights), plus it is currently on sale for a $500 discount and has a lot more features than several other drones costing twice as much.

Granted, the lower depths in northern waters are much murkier than in the clear azure waters of the Caribbean, but this just means that viewing anything (like your anchor at 250 feet down) off Long Island requires both getting close and plenty of added lighting, which this particular drone offers.

Also, using its all-aspect thrust vectoring (…watch the demo video in the ad), it can easily track down the anchor line from the boat, but you could also rig a tether to keep it on track for studying your options to free a snagged anchor or just check its set. This could be especially valuable on a cold windy night in a crowded anchorage where the water is too dark and deep to make a safe and pleasant free dive.

However, I can envision sitting comfortably aboard at anchor while exploring the piscine world beneath the boat wherever you happen to sail.

I did watch the video and as you can see they only show it operating in VERY clear waters. Before you throw a thousand bucks buying it I would try a demo with it in your local waters. Another thing you need to check if it is easy to travel with. Last I checked it’s Lithium battery can not legally be carried in checked luggage. It might not pass muster with airport security. Other than operating the drone in good water clarity my experience is it is very disorientating operating in less than ideal water conditions. Think about trying to fly an aerial drone in fog. That’s been my experience in local waters. But, people can spend their money as they see fit. I just could not recommend the purchase for all waters.
