Wanted Vent Hood for On-Demand Water Heater

Hi all,
I am installing a new Excel propane on-demand water heater. Once upon a time the boat had a Paloma but by the time I purchased her the unit had been removed even though water and gas tubes were still there (capped off) along with the hole in the cabin top for the flue. Even though the Excel unit is deemed a ventless unit, I want to exhaust the heat from the cabin that it will generate. I am going to install a Dickinson double bell flue cap on deck and use a doubled walled flue from a Dickinson propane heater to exhaust the heat and also allow fresh air to enter the cabin. I was hoping that someone might have a vent hood from their Paloma or Wolters unit that they no longer want or need. Would be happy to buy it from you. I’m sure I’ll need to do some modifications to make this work I wouldn’t have to fabricate a hood. Appreciate any help you might be able to provide.

Hi Jim,

I have done essentially what you did and I left the Wolter hood in place to vent the flue gases from the Excel. I have at least one spare hood, but (always a but!) it is now packed away as I am in the middle of a move. Get back to me if you are still looking much later in the season or over the winter.

Good luck with the installation,

I’m sure you’ve thought of this, but make sure you don;’t have any hull insurance problems with that heater as many have.

I have the Paloma hood (and heater) from my 82 Classic where the heater is mounted in the head. I assume the hood is the same shape/size. Mine is also in storage but I could get it mid September when I'm next there.

However, bit late for this since you have already installed the Excel but the reason we pulled ours is that our marine insurance (BoatUS) required us to as our surveyor flagged it as an ABYC compliance issue.

Jim,
Welcome to the west coast. I'm sure It's proving to be a change from the northeast. The mid-September timeframe will be fine. Please contact me directly via my e-mail address and we'll work out the particulars. Thank you and everyone else that responded.

Cheers!
