Wash down systems

This seems to be my year for adding toys - now it's a deck wash down system.
(I *said* I wouldn't do this, but here I go.)

Would be interested in recommendations for systems of sufficient PSI and GPM
to do an adequate job of cleaning the anchor/rode and deck, without
pretensions of repelling boarders.

Bill , I installed a standard wasdown pump(Par if I remember correctly) in the space behind the head access panel along with the domestic water pump.
I installed a T in the line to head water supply for the wasdown water pump. I then installed an outlet fitting on the deck as far forward as could be easily installed which was about 8 ft from the bow. With a coiled water hose attached to the deck fitting there is plenty of pressure for the anchor cleaning and deterring unwanted guests.

This is a project that I have been thinking about too. In the
"Installation Ideas" section of the old INA web site (which has not
yet been ported to the new site), Baron Whateley has described a
system he built which is close to what I would like to have. It's
complete with pictures, drawings and specifications. To take a look,
go to the following site: http://nonsuch.readyhosting.com/InstIdeas.asp
and then click on "Portable Deck Washer".

I installed a wash down pump using a Shurflow 4.0 GPM pump. I plumbed it on a Tee from the galley sink drain. By stoppering the sink, it will draw salt water from the thruhull. By closing the thruhull and filling the sink, the deck wash can use fresh water. Nice way to use stale fresh water rather than just pouring down the drain.

The pump is on the side of the cabinet below the galley sink. As I added more fittings below the waterline, I keep the thruhull closed except when using the sink. Being paranoid has its values.

It works very well for me.

Bill, how do you lead the hose from the pump topsides? Is it plumbed
to a deck fitting, or do you just drag a temporary hose up?

Bill,

I ran the line forward from the galley sink under the forward berth next to the fresh water tank and into the anchor locker. From the fitting on the deck near the bow pulpit it is very easy to wash down the anchor chain and anchor. I also have enough hose to just get to wash the rail all the way to the stern.

Bill,

This sounds like a great idea. Is there any chance you can post some
pictures?

I connected to a t at the head intake and ran the line up thru the small locker in the v-birth to a Jabsco washdown quick connect found at the bottom of page 477 of the West Marine catalog. Double hose clamps all around and you don't have to put a stopper in any where.

My washdown also comes off a T on the head water intake. Pump is next to shower sump and water pump. Outlet is on deck just in front of the cabin.

I believe I sent these photos out a few weeks back, but I’ll do it again. The demand pump is under the head sink. The quick connect fitting is just about flush with the deck. No valves to turn on, just the breaker and nothing to trip over.

Joe V’s deck fitting is the same as mine, although mine is older and not stainless.
It is by New Found Metals (http://www.newfoundmetals.com/catalog/pg07.html) and is carried by West Marine. Nice fitting. It is about 3/8" short of being absolutely flush to the deck.

Joe:

I’m in the process of converting BIANKA’s old fuel tank into a freshwater tank for wash downs. This deck fitting looks like it would be perfect. Thanks for posting a picture.

Cleaning Out Diesel Tank.

I doubt very much, depite all efforts with all means, that you will ever be able to get rid of minut traces of diesel when you fill with Fresh Water.
These traces would make for a slippy deck.

For the folks with wash down systems -- do you have a strainer before your pump? If so, what strainer do you have?

I have a deck washdown pump connected to a dedicated seacock. Between the pump and the seacock is a Jabsco Pumpguard strainer (Model 46400-0002). The only time the seacock is open is when the washdown system is being used.

Nonetheless, when I bought the bought the boat the surveyor included the following as a REQUIRED change: "Upgrade non-reinforced plastic strainer with reinforced plastic and/or bronze strainer...." I've looked through various catalogs have not found an obvious replacement. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

The surveyor probably is thinking you or someone else may forget to
close the seacock and the strainer may develop a crack in its body.
He might approve it if the strainer were located higher than the
waterline by some safe margin.

Well we’ll see. But, so far my efforts of using Simple Green followed by some steam cleaning have worked very well:

I plan to do another couple of cleanings with some Dawn dish washing liquid and water in the tank letting it slosh around. It’s what they use on the birds and other animals after the oil spills.

I’m curious what brand and model windlass do you have in the photo on your deck?
