Wilcox Crittenden Imperial 51 rebuild kit

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are the happy new owners of 30U # 516 Challenge. The boat is currently in northern Michigan and my plan is to bring her to her new home on Lake St Clair in April. In preparation for the upcoming season I’m hoping to acquire spare parts kits for various systems on the boats.

The boat is equipped with what I think is a Wilcox Crittenden Imperial 51 toilet which I also suspect may need to be rebuilt. In searching the internet I see a lot of sources that show the rebuild kit is no longer available and it appears that rebuild kit may not be produced any longer. Any help or advice as to how to source these parts would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Greg & Lynne Doyal

I would contact Marine San in Seattle. They are a good source of info. It does seem these kits are hard to find. It it is any help we are on our boat from June to Sept up in the North Channel and the last rebuild I did was in 2004. W tap water and used only flushed using jugs of water and used no head lub etc. The holding tank odour was managed with KO.

It looks like the two key rubber pieces may be still available. There is a spring manufacturer in Brighton MI who could make up a spring. The leathers are no easy to “make” but I know of one owner who replaced them with a stainless “puck” and an o ring around the circumference.

I would move heaven and earth to keep it running as the new ones are not close to the quality . And nothing ruins your day like a head on the fritz

That said we moved to a composting toliet, but not because the head was an issue, it worked fine.

Off topic a little but can you tell me more about your composting toilet? I am a new owner and was wondering if I could reduce my holding tank requirements if I used a composting toilet. I may need the space generated for extra batteries as I have sleep apnea and have to run a machine over night.

Binnacle marine in Halifax has two WC rebuild kits; I don’t know if either fits the Imperial 51.

The boat had a nice solid WC head when we bought it but my wife didn’t like it ( cold handle at night right about mid thigh ). For less than the cost of a rebuild kit we bought a Jabsco. That’s 7 years ago I think and now have to buy another Jabsco because this one is cracking, and other problems. $200. I’m looking at going to an AirHead because the holding tank is also a problem; too small, too smelly.

My son rebuilt out 51. Believe we got the kit from Defender. Bob Horne, 1989 N26C, 249, ENCORE, Pocasset, MA.

We have had an Airhead on our 30U since 2010 (just pulled our receipt - 2/22/10 purchase for $1004, including shipping). We needed to build a small platform to give us a stable base to mount the unit, and have carried a small step-stool to make it easier for those who are height challenged to use the unit. We vented the unit through the Dorado box over the shower, putting a solar fan on the box instead of hard-wiring the pancake fan that the unit came with. We removed the pancake fan so it did not hinder airflow. This winter I am going to drill a hole through the wall between shower and head to run the exhaust hose through the wall and get it out of the way. (I considered running PVC piping, but decided there would be too many hard turns that would decrease the airflow too much - if anyone knows better, I would love to hear from you.)

We created an instruction plaque that mounts exactly where the WC plaque mounted. Even printed it on green paper to match the old WC plaque and then sealed it in plastic. I can share if anyone is interested.

With two people aboard, we need to empty the fluids container every other day. If the wind is real brisk, we try not to sail with the tank more than 1/2 filled (it will leak otherwise while heeled over hard). Leakage was a big problem, corrected for the most part by a new spring Airhead sent us. Seals much better.

When we removed the old WC, tank and pump, We also removed 47 hose clamps. While I never really worried about them, I was shocked by the number of clamps and the potential for a problem. We also removed the smelly hoses and tank. The Airhead only smells if you leave the liquids go too long before emptying - do it at least once a week when it is hot out. It is the liquids that tend to smell, not the solids which dry out fairly quickly.

Last summer while on a week long cruise, we broke the hinges on the toilet seat. Not something I thought to carry a spare of. It is a marine seat, which is smaller that a home seat. Fortunately, I found a home seat at a hardware store with identical hinges, swapped the hinges and tossed the brand new seat and lid (seemed very wasteful tossing it, but what else was I to do with it). The cruise could continue.

We freed up considerable space - enough for a few cases of beer, or I suppose batteries, but beer is more fun.

I have pictures if anyone wants to see.

We put an Airhead in last year. mainly to extend the time away from the dock. The install was easy, I used the marine size. removing the old hose and tank took all the time. The exhaust line runs back through the aft berth to the lazarette locker on the starboard side. I used pvc pipe and the supplied muffin fan. Current draw was not measurably different from before off 2 golf car batteries that are the house bank.

We empty the urine every day and the solid tank every 4 - 5 weeks with 2 on board full time. No and I mean no odour, no holding tank, no noise. Airhead were very helpful in providing measurements etc…

We can now have the G kids on board and not be fretting about the head…

A friend may be putting one in a 30 ultra this summer and if they do we will publish the installations in Update.

Email me if you need more info.

White O’morn our 26 is an Ultra model and I could not find a way to install our airhead so I sold it along with our previous Cape Dory. I wish I could have made it fit. If anyone does figure out a way please let me know.

Sorry, I guess I wasn’t clear we sold both the Cape Dory and the Airhead.. I wanted to keep the Airhead, but could not get it to fit so we sold the Airhead with the Cape Dory. White O’morn has an electric head at present, but I would love to switch it out for a competing head.

Thanks for the photo Thor. Almost looks like it was meant to be there.

I see 2 options for the “liquid bottle size”. 1 or 2 gallons. Which one is that in the photo?

Here are Airhead installed pix from an NS30U done about 4 years ago a friend’s boat. Always important to hear a woman’s critique of such a system so I was particularly interested in heating his wife’s comments a year after installation.
She reported that she was very pleased with it & no unpleasant odors, etc.

I gallon.

Thor,

Thank you for the advice. I contacted MarineSans and they have a few misc. pieces available but no full kit. Hopefully your experience with your old WC going years without a rebuild will prove true for me as well. If not, a replacement will be necessary.

Hi Tim,

I reached out to Binnacle and Eric indicates those kits will not work on the Imperial 51. Thanks for the help though! It looks increasingly like there are no complete rebuild kits available for my WC head.

As much as I loved and respected my WC head (they say it can flush beer cans …), I, too, opted for a good deal on the small Jabsco for less than $200.00 CAD. I did find a WC re-build kit (for around $170.00 CAD) such that I could re-build a 1986 era toilet. And hope that I didn’t screw the job up. That way, I’d have a “re-built” 33 year old toilet. What do most of us do with our 33 year old toilets at home ?? Usually, toss them or plant flowers in them. We don’t tend to re-build them (at almost the cost of a new “OK quality” one.

It just didn’t seem like the best idea. I think my new Jabsco will last for years and I’m pleased with it. And more important, so is my girlfriend.

Robert,

Thanks for the lead. I contacted Defender and unfortunately they no longer offer the rebuild kits.

Greg

Hi Greg, we own #393 (1987 NS30U) with the same Wilcox-Chrittenden toilet. When the boat was 20 years old someone jammed the choker with a big wad of toilet paper forcing me to take it apart. I had a rebuild kit at the ready and was planning to replace the worn parts since it was going to be apart anyway. The end result was that once the parts were cleaned up no parts needed replacement.

Hopefully that will be the same story for you. If not please contact me as I may have the parts you need.

Regards…Ron
