Up here my mast storage is about $350 including removal, racking etc whereas boat lift-out, handling and storage Sept. to May is about $1800.

Wow, either your yard charges are cheap for boat storage or they really treat that mast nice!
I pay $365 to have the mast stored in the shed with all the other masts.
Can not say how much it costs to haul the mast just part of the haulout event.
I believe the yard crew gets a good lock at things doing that so have that added benefit.
It is true the winter here are windy. I do see Nonsuch around with the mast still up and have always wondered.
So was intereesting to see this conversation.

Once again, the way I see it -
If it helps the boat while it’s on the hard, leave it up. (No one will ever prove to me that leaving the mast up with the boat out of the water is GOOD for the boat).
If it has NO ill effects on the boat, by all means, leave it up. (Mark Ellis and Mike Quill advocate removing it when on the hard. Their opinion certainly counts for something !! Opinion seems to be divided when it comes to us owners.)
It may cost $$$ to pull it (and it’s crazy if it costs a lot … ) but I think it a better practise to remove it if the boat is on the hard, certainly, for a while.

In Toronto, our club takes mast out and stores it for winter and then reinstalls it ALL for free, but will not allow boat storage with mast in.
In Florida, the marina each year would charge thousands of dollars for mast removal and storage and replacement, but no extra $ if left up.
At the Florida price, it made more sense to immobilize the top of the mast, and almost no one removed masts.
Different places, different costs and rules, different decisions.
I have done both. I was on board with the mast in on a windy day. It convinced me that the vibration felt throughout the boat was not a good thing. So I always pull the mast now.
