I've got a double block at the masthead. I'd like to rig a second backup halyard. Can I exit both halyards out of the single exit hole I currently have or do I need to cut a second hole?

Mike, I’d say a second exit would be recommended… I really can’t see how the single exit would work with two lines, they would get tangled and would not work well together. Email Mike Quill for his advice, I’m sure he will have the best answer for you.

Hi Mike, a friend of mine has the same arrangement at the masthead. He has run a small nylon line through the the halyard slot at the base of the mast, up over the second shieve at the mast head and back down again. Both ends are secured very tightly at the base of the mast so that this messenger line does not get tangled up with the halyard. It’s been like that for 26 years…no problem.

Yeah I was looking at the exit hole last night and yeah it would be tight. Though I’m not real keen on cutting another hole in the mast right now.
