Ran a second halyard this year. I was nervous not having a backup. Wondering how others have run their second halyard? Specifically, where do you secure the shackle (I’ve attached mine to the base of the forward most starboard side lifeline stanchion). How have you run the line down the cabin top? And how do you manage the line in the cockpit. Pictures would be great!
I do exactly that. I shackle it to the lifeline stanchion just tight enough for it to not rattle. Know that if the boom goes to the opposite side on a run, it will get tighter. You don’t want to make it to tight
I have a stack pack that is pretty low slung. So low that it does not allow the front hatch to open more than 5 inches. When anchoring or at a dock and spending the night, I use the second halyard to lift the sail at the point the hatch makes contact. I can open the hatch fully that way.
Once I left it shackled to the ring when I left the boat for a week. I came back to it fastened to a lift line for the stack pack. A boat neighbor fessed up as it was slamming against the mast in the wind. He moved it so they could sleep.
