A Peek at Discourse for Discussions

Hi All,

We have had a running discussion about whether to replace or perhaps augment Google Groups with something more modern and capable. Some of us have made it clear that they like the current use of email and even that they would not consider a change. I am not writing this to reopen that conversation. However, I thought that it would be beneficial to give this group a glimpse at how a typical topic thread would look on Discourse.

I took the discussion about shore power connections from a couple of weeks ago and took each of the dozen postings and copied them one by one to a test Discourse site. The link below shows how things would look if the conversation had taken place on Discourse.

You should scroll down through the dozen postings to get to the end (it will show your progress on the right). There you will see a Summarize button and a REPLY button. (If you keep scrolling you go into the next topic). If you hit the Summarize button, you will get an AI generated summary of the topic with the high points and references back to particular content for more details. If you hit the REPLY button, it will ask you to Login (you have to be a member of the community to add a comment/posting).

The postings for this one topic are located here:

https://n26-115-233.discourse.group/t/shore-power-options/57

If you click on the my icon on the upper right on the postings, you will get some of my profile info (since I copied the postings over, it has me as the author).

As with everything else, things will look different if you do this on a computer or on a cell phone, but it’s basically the same. On either one, if you click on the N26 in the upper right, it will take you to the homepage. Just testing some things out - it’s a work in progress…

I must be doing something wrong, (or right) since I don’t have to go anywhere or scroll up or down. I just click on the incoming post to read it.

Hi Jon,

Generally looks good to me, except in your last two paragraphs you refer to icons in the upper right, but if I’m understanding you correctly, on my computer the icons are in the upper left. See screen shot attached.

Oops… Sorry - when you’re signed in, your own icon is located at the upper right.

You’re correct, of course, the author of the posting is on the top left.

Jon

And again, my bad, the N26 is top left on the page.

I will support something more modern and capable.
