Alternator / tachometer trouble

I’m having some trouble I’m trying to diagnose. My tachometer is intermittently working and then not working, and it appears to coincide with not charging / charging. I checked the wires - seem to be fine. I’m using a Balmar monitor so I can see the amps in both directions. Is this an alternator problem?

Thanks

I just had this problem just 2 weeks ago, tach was intermittent and volts at 12 on engine panel on a couple of trips. Then a few days later, no tach at all. I found the excitor wires had fallen off the alternator. They are connected with female spade connector, I guess it was coming loose, and finally fell off due to engine vibration. Another wire had broken off from its spade connector. I’m not sure how this works, but the tach gets its signal from the alternator.

I put on new spade connectors and reattached wires to alternator. Works fine now, tach works and volts read about 13.75.
