Cowl ventilators

I own a NS36 and I am looking to replace my 4 roof cowl ventilators. I would like to replace the chimneys only since my dorades are already installed and function well. These chimneys are the slip-on type. Are they still available on the market?

Stright-Mackay sells the Vetus cowl ventilators Chinook (4’‘) silicone for $125 each or the TOMS (4’') PVC for $134 each. Both of these come with the plastic ring nuts and the mating deck flanges. Does anyone know if they fit the NS dorades and templates?

Should I go with silicone or PVC? The old ones are pretty discolored and yucky. Thanks.

I replaced mine this year after one accidentally went overboard. This was the best price at the time for a white PVC.

Thanks for the info Will. I’ll check to see if the Sea Dog line is available in Canada.

I’ve had fantastic luck spray painting a flexible cowl. Used special paint (available at Home Depot). Three years now and it still looks like new.

Do you know the name and type of paint that you’ve used on the cowl ?? Is it a lacquer, by any chance ?

Ernie,
It was a Rust-oleum but it specifically said for plastics. The cowl I painted looked like trash and I just took a chance. Surprised myself in that it came out looking like new.

Wow …

On a (white, presumably) plastic flexible cowl that gets gooey and sticky halfway through the summer ?? How fantastic is that !!

Thanks, Jim.

I keep ours looking new with 3M wax/cleaner...

I clean my flexible cowl vent (very quickly) with acetone.
