Hello all,
Thanks to generosity of Safe Harbour Marina, Stratford Ct and an ol shipmate of mine we will have a diesel work shop on Saturday ,November 9th, 2024 at the Stratford Marina location. Dutch lunch will be available after for those wishing to stay.
I’m also looking for help to see if we can broadcast the event via zoom. ( any help is appreciated there)
When -as noted the workshop will be Saturday , November 9, 2024 9:30am till noon.
Where - Safe Harbor Marina, Stratford Ct. 605 Broad Street , Stratford, Ct (shmarinas.com)
Dutch Lunch after at Outriggers Restaurant , located in the marina.
Who - Joe DeMers , an ol shipmate of mine , diesel mechanic extraordinaire with extensive knowledge on the subject, Beta Marine Rep, raconteur and part time (sorta) comedian. He told me he’s retired but enjoys presenting these types of workshops.
Subject - Diesel engines and how to better understand them. The workshop is designed to assist the novice as well as the more experienced on the subject of diesels. No prior experience is necessary and any question regarding your particular engine is fair game. There will be an overview of diesel engine operation but this workshop will focus on evaluating a problem to either make the repair yourself or to articulate the issue to a mechanic. When you sign up below pls note the engine you have. I will forward the info to Joe to chew over before the event. There have been questions regarding repowering which will be discussed. As a side note, I repowered my Westerbeke27 engine with a Beta 25 about ten yrs ago now.
Cost - unless you’re staying for lunch there is no cost for this workshop. Safe Harbor Marina is providing the room at no cost and Joe is proving his time at no cost. Joe has given this presentation to a number of sail clubs over the years including The New York Yacht Club where we had well over one hundred in attendance and was very well received.
If you plan to attend , please fill in the following, I’ll gather the info from here.

Prop info and type - 3 Blade fixed / bronze (16RH X 11P)
Your experience level /do you perform any of your own work or maintenance: New to marine diesels. OK with self maintenance of tractor diesels and auto ( gas ). Trying to do as much maintenance as I can generally takes lots more time than it would take someone with experience.
Specific question(s) to your engine or issue:
I don’t ( currently ) have any questions, but I’ve spent a ton of time talking to others that do their own maintenance and lots of time researching online. I enjoy doing the work, but I’m thinking I need a professional assessment of Soave’s engine and any skills I may lack to perform proper maintenance. Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know.
BTW, thanks for organizing this….. I saw an earlier request for help with zoom. I organize and train zoom presenters for a local lifelong learning program. I’d be happy to help look at options for sharing the workshop with others that can’t attend in person. Given the experiences I’ve had with live online classes, I’d be inclined to capture the presentation and share it via youtube rather than try to provide an interactive experience for both in-person and remote attendees… but happy to help with any approach the group wants to use.
