Electric winch handle

Has anyone used a DeWalt model DCD740C1 right angle electric drill to assist hoisting the sail on a Nonsuch26? Or are there other recommendations.

Allan, I use the Milwaukie 28 volt right angle drill with winch adapter on my 26C. It works well; so much easier than cranking with a standard handle. I have also used it to raise the anchor when set in a deep harbor. The latter requires bringing the rode back to the main sheet winch and, of course, the chain and anchor have to be done hand-over-hand once you reach it. But when you’ve got 150 to 200 feet of rode out, hand-lining is tough on your hands, arms, and back. The Milwaukie is reversible so when the sail gets near the top and bogs the drill, just reverse and take advantage of the winch gearing. Bob

Hi - I considered that last year, but instead bought a Winchrite from http://www.sailology.com/ I figured if i had problems they would be more responsive since i am using it for its intended purpose. It worked well all season - at least two hauls up on a charge. Seem to work pretty hard at it, but that is because my winch is lined up all wrong. the former owner went to great trouble to awlgrip the whole boat - it looks gorgeous - but then installed the winch as if it went the other way round, so the line comes out of the clutch at a ridiculous angle, causing horrendous drag. it is impossible to raise the sail manually unless someone stands at the mast to pull the halyard down from there.

I use the WinchRite to raise the sail on my Nonsuch 30. I have a Doyle Stack. It works quite well. Don’t let it get too wet though. Water destroyed the battery operated motor. WinchRite repaired and replaced the entire unit very quickly, under warranty.

I use a Winchbit in a regular SEARS drill (400 inch pounds torque). Works well raising the sail on my 30u.

Hi-

I also use the Winchrite unit. Two seasons so far. I like it a lot! Had an issue the first season, Winchrite promptly and courteously addressed it, and all has been great since.

I get approximately 5 lifts of the sail before needing to recharge. As it weighs only about 6 lbs, anyone can operate it. Some drills weigh in at 10-12 lbs.

Though the instructions advise against it, I've used it to send me up the mast on several occassions without any difficulties.

It was an excellent addition to my gear!
