Most of my negative experiences regarding the electric conversion involved the diesel engine. From using the diesel mechanic who when he first saw my Westerbeke 27 said “I never worked on an engine this big.” That should have tipped me off.
But, I was desperate having spent the season on the mooring. After I found the Thoosa 9000 electric system I still needed to remove the diesel engine. I managed to sell the old Westerbeke to a diesel shop with the stipulation the he would help remove the old diesel engine. After he arrived and did some preliminary work he turned too me and said I need $300 from you for my time. Needless to say he did not get the engine and I ended up removing the engine myself which was oddly satisfying having accomplished it without any help. I only needed the yard to remove it from the cabin with their crane.

There is no shortage of self made “handy men” who believe that boat owners are cash cows. I usually do my own work within my capabilities which not only saves my budget but my project gets done right. Usually if it’s something I can’t do myself the professional who can is generally qualified by their experience and reputation. Many of these handy men take your work to a pro and charge you a premium for their service.

An engine that “runs Great” is not necessarily a good engine due to not knowing what’s going to happen down the road er, channel. If you want to know the status, have your oil analyzed. One of the best things to make your engine last, besides treating it kindly, is more oil changes
