Garboard plugs

I’m writing today to see if anybody has a garboard drain plug in a 26C, to see where it is located; also if anybody has installed one… I would like to install one and am looking for any advice or tips. Thanks all!

Hi Greg -

My 26 and my 22 came equipped with Datamarine speedo. So, rather than putting another hole in the boat, I would pull the speedo transducer and put a wad of bronze wool in the hole to discourage birds from coming aboard. My judgement was that hole was a a point where if the bilge flooded it would carry away the overflow. I never had a problem though, as I always covered the boat for winter.

Thanks Mike. I actually have done that in the past (but not religiously)….my transducer thru hull is not at the lowest point where I’d like to have the bilge drain, but this is a good workaround as at least it is below the sole. I have had a catasphrophe in the past and am just finishing up making a whole new sole. After 52 years I’m not complaining, but I don’t want a repeat.

Hi Greg. I agree that the transducer hole is not as low as ideal. I’ve always had the good fortune (I think) to be able to store in my yard, so it’s been easy for me to keep an eye on things. I certainly would not be keen to be replacing the cabin sole. Hope your project turns out as you like. Best, Mike

Greg, I pull my transducer located under the table for the past 20 years to prevent water filling the bilge as happened to one Nonsuch owner years ago. It is not the low point, but low enough to prevent damage to the teak. Write yourself a memo to remind yourself to replace it in the spring before launching. John Newell, Mascouche 26C 1 Toronto

Thanks John. Yes, that works and the note should be posted in a prominent place aboard! I am still interested to know if anyone has installed a garboard plug at the very lowest point in the bilge.
