Grease cup issue

Readers’ digest version.
88 boat, 35 year old rusty (fuzzy) cup. A few years ago when I was still able to unscrew the cap I drilled a small hole in the center cap and screwed in a zerk.
I didn’t grease for a year or so. This year applied grease fitting and grease flows out of fitting around fitting but not in the cup.
Question, do I replace the zerk ( hoping the cap won’t fail) or do I try a
Hack and apply heat to soften the fitting to loosen the gummed up grease.
Should I bite the bullet and unscrew the cup from the fiberglass and replace the cup or install a zerk fitting ?
The latter would be something I would get the marina to handle.
Thanks

I had basically the same problem except that mine was also stripped in the fibreglass. The attached album shows how I fixed it. In my case I replaced the old grease cup but you could as easily thread a Zerk fitting in the existing hole if it’s not stripped or the bigger one I drilled if it is. You can see that the old grease in it was a solid block.

Chancy didn’t have a grease cup and the thread was stripped. I was able to replace it with a hose and a zerk and I am glad I did BUT I always remind myself that a grease gun can put out a great deal more pressure than a cap and fill with great care.
