Not sure why the pic is so odd… but I’m quite happy with the shape. I’ll have a canvas across the back so it will be a bit like a pilot house. Also a heat duct. Weight is about 60 pounds.
Looks great Ron. You’re going to love it.
Yes, it really does look great, Ron.
Do you by any chance have any plans, drawings, or specs for this that you’d be willing to share with the rest of us?
I’m guessing I’m not the only one who’d be interested in duplicating something like this.
Also, another question: what are your thoughts about the best way to attach it to the cabintop? One of the things I’ve been wondering about in thinking about going this route is whether a hardtop needs to be bolted down vs. epoxied to deck.
Thanks,
– Bob
It does look really good. But I’m from the PNW so I have a different question: are you going to install windshield wipers? ![]()
To Bob and Brian….
Mine has been through two seasons now held down to the deck by about 8 #8 screws and it’s solid as a rock.
I’ve considered wipers but so far haven’t made the leap. There are several quite cheap manual versions made for ATVs that look promising but the devil is in the details.
Thanks for the encouraging words!
I’m happy to share what I have, but it’s all in my head. No plans. All parts are made from 4mm ply / 1/2” balsa core / 4mm ply. All epoxied together. Once I’m happy with the shape I’ll cover the entire outside in 2 layers on 6oz and one layer on the inside. It’s marine ply but I’d rather not have to fix this thing in a couple years. The top comes out of a 4x8 sheet and I tried to get close to the curve of the cabin top. There is a bit of curve in the cabin sides and it’s wider at the front than the back. That required a jig to get the panels right. The quarter window were made on the boat and then I brought it back to the shop for finishing.
All the windows will be tinted acrylic. The front one will open, hinged at the top. There is also a central skylight. The back will have canvas in three parts, two side curtains that fit into the slot for the cockpit lockers and a central roll up/removable door. Should be a cozy little spot in there especially with the heat duct down low.
I have some pads molded in to bolt it down. One in each aft corner and two on the front that will go where the last bit of hand rail was. …I had to cut the hand rail shorter to fit this in.
A wiper could be added for sure. I’ll try it first with just RainX and see.
I had most of the materials on hand and that kinda drove the construction style. It would be lighter and a little easier if built out of foam core. But, it’s definitely a fun project.

This is going to be my next project! Once I get the 6 leaks filled. The hard top is already there so I have a base to create off of. How tall can you make it without affecting the sail? I also have to get a full enclosure. Did you lay it out on the boat then finish it in the shop? I live in Vancouver so I don’t have a shop.
Have to do it on the boat but doable.
Great design and build - well done ! Gary /aloki
Still waiting on the plexi but wanted to get it out of the shop. It’s a little more yellow in the daylight than I expected. It will go nicely with the bronze windows though.

Looks good!
You can always paint it to match. My Nonsuches have been pretty close to Oyster White, fwiw.

Looks great Ron. You’re going to love it. FWIW you can take a cockpit hatch cover or some other part to a paint store and they can match it by scanning it. They matched mine perfectly.
… then I painted the whole deck and dodger the next spring…![]()

Thanks! Picked up some paint today… really happy with the shape. Plexi next week.

Just a caution…
I used some “value priced” acrylic from Amazon for two of my windows. It claimed to be UV resistant but those two are quite yellow now while the rest are basically as new. I just picked up some replacement pieces locally at just around twice the price.
Ya, I’ve learned that lesson. The plexi is coming from a real plastic shop. 320$ for the 5 pieces.
