Yeah, that’s a concern but you can help mitigate any problems in two ways. First, turn more on your first turn. When the sail comes over it will be depowered sooner leaving more slack in the main sheet (which prevents a snag from doing damage). Second, you can do what I often do which is to have the autopilot do the initial turn. That frees you up to face the stern and “whip” or guide the sheet over any potential snags.
Practice in light air first. It’s really effective once you get used to it.
