I’m a bit late to this discussion…
However, Paul Beaudin at Doyle Sailmakers, now in Mamaroneck, NY is who I’ve used for years. They have mended my old sail, and then built my new sail a few seasons ago using Botts pattern. Very easy to work with, he listens to concerns, makes suggestions based on his decades of experience.
His expertise is so appreciated, we asked Paul if he would be part of the Greenport Nonsuch Renezvous in August 2026, and has agreed to be a presenter during our presentations block!
So compile your sail questions, ie cloth weight, batons, reefing points, etc and have them ready during the rendezvous.
Paul/Doyle also made the StackPack for my boat back in 2014(?) and it is still going strong and one of the best additions to my boat!
For Siva’s (Hi Siva!) initial question, my setup used the steel shackle for years, until I read on the discussion group that the attachment is better if you can cut it in a rare emergency, so I changed it to be a few winds of line attached to the steel shackle (see attached photo). The advantage for me has been it helps the mainsheet and boom clear my high bimini as the aft end of the boom is further back. It also makes attaching and detaching the sail easier when needed.
