Lithium Battery

I put a Watt Cycle battery in replacing my Trojan Golf carts battery bank that s now my start. bank.

Setting up the DC to DC charger and the battery monitor requied a good deal of reading of the manual. And today these are not 2 page affairs. ANd they entail such topics as “tail current” for example. We are a long wat from just testin g Spg !

However to try to clairtfy the best setting proticol and reconcile battery BMS’s settings with Victron I must say WattCycle the battery manufacturer has been excemplorary in responding to questions in a prompt manner. Witness the follwoing exchange,

Hello Thor,

Thank you for your message. Here are the **recommended Victron monitor settings** for your **WattCycle 12V 314Ah Mini LiFePO4 battery**:

| Setting | Recommended Value | Notes |

| **Peukert exponent** | **1.05** | Standard and best for LiFePO4. No need to change. |

| **Charge efficiency** | **99%** | Perfect — you already have this. |

| **Discharge floor** | **20%** | Excellent choice for long battery life. |

| **Tail current** | **3%** → **9.4 A** | **Best setting** for this 314Ah battery |

| **Charged voltage** | **14.4 V – 14.6 V** | Most accurate for full charge detection |

| **Charge detection time**| 3 minutes | Standard value |

# Why Tail Current = 3% (9.4 A)?

- Your 314Ah battery finishes charging when the current drops to roughly 3% of its capacity.

- Setting it at **3% (9.4 A)** gives the most accurate “100% SOC” reading on the Victron.

- If you notice the Victron reaches 100% a little early or late, you can adjust slightly to 2.5% (≈8 A) or 4% (≈12.5 A).

Feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Emily

WattCycle Customer Support

Thor, thanks for sharing. It’s awesome to get a detailed answer from customer support, especially when the topic is tricky like with lithium battery management.

Apologies in advance for the following digression:

I am 99% certain based on the formatting that the email you received was written by an AI.

I’m not discriminating about the source of good advice, be it human or computer. But the upshot is that you can get high quality advice about a variety of boat topics from AI, without having to go through customer support for a particular product. I would recommend trying it.

Here’s an example of an exchange I just had with the AI “Claude,” asking it what I’m guessing you asked WattCycle support: https://claude.ai/share/56017903-fef8-4b1c-b753-ad73d7f41220

The answers are pretty similar, although I would trust WattCycle’s AI to have better data about their own products.

Indeed this AI revolution is offering pause to old school people like me but on the other hand if we want to move into new school subjects we have to “ Trust our cape” so to speak . That or trust other old school people that take the leap. I will be watching.

For example I just singed up for the free Claude, app and asked where is the 2026 INA Rendezvous and was told it would be in Newport RI. When I corrected Him, Her, It I was thanked for the information. Claude.knows me from Adam.
Just sayin,

By the way it is in Greenport, NY
