Ernie - it’s a bit much to claim Toronto as being Canada’s “Eastern Paradise”
Obviously you have never been to Nova Scotia !!!

I took a full sailing course more than 30 years ago, passed the exam and was looking to buy a sailboat at that time. Then I met George, who would become my husband. He’s terribly seasick and really couldn’t do it. He gallantly took the sailing course with me, but some days we had to bring him back to the dock, sick as a dog. So I gave up the idea of getting a sailboat and did other things instead. So I have that long ago and pretty minimal experience. I remember almost none of what I learned back then. This past summer some friends who have a lovely sloop took me for a sail and could see how much I loved it. They suggested I look for a Nonsuch, which would be easy to sail and which I could single hand.
As for a B n B, I have a vacation rental in the lower level of my home in Maple Bay. It’s spacious and fully furnished and equipped. You can see it on VRBO.com under the name The Garden Suite. I have had people from other parts of Canada come and stay in it, from Alberta to Newfoundland. It’s a five minute drive to the MBYC, Rosy Red’s new home. There are, of course, other nice vacation rentals in the area. An especially nice one is “Taste the View”, also listed on VRBO. So who knows, maybe we really could get to go for a sail together some time. And you already know how to sail the boat!
I might have mentioned that I grew up in Hamilton. I love the area around Toronto and agree with you that it’s an eastern paradise.

Paul, Thank you. That’s a lovely offer. I would love to come and check it out sometime. It’s not a long drive for me to get there. I’m free tomorrow (Sunday) except around 2:00 when I’ll get my vaccine booster. Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday would be good too. Then I’ll be in Vancouver for a few days. Whenever suits you. Very much looking forward to meeting you and seeing Sandpiper up close. Best, Elsie
That sounds like great advice, Dorothy. Thank you.

That was a joke. The distinction really goes to Montreal.
Ok, OK … my daughter lives in Halifax and Nova Scotia is absolutely stunning. I know it well. been all over the province.
Ernie A. in Toronto
Ernie, on Vancouver Island we think of the mainland as “Eastern Canada” so you have to consider some other cities.
It’s all a matter of perspective. ![]()
I would like to put a word in for Spuzzum, BC. For anyone who doesn’t know where Spuzzum is it is just beyond Hope and just before Hells Gate. Currently the rest of the world is cut off from Spuzzum.

Yes, of course, how could we have bypassed the charms of Spuzzum? I can see you swimming upriver towards Hells Gate with a tow rope in your teeth and Chancy right behind you. Maybe we could all sail up the Fraser to meet you there?
Hi Mark. I don't know what kind of slides I have for the sail. I'll check. Thanks for your suggestion to use Sunlight dish soap on the slides. Sounds like a good idea. I've had a look at Mike.Quill's website. I suppose someone needs to be at the top of the mast to check the sheave? I'm sure I'll get the rigging and maintenance issues sorted out in time. I haven't had the boat for a week yet and we've been working away at correcting some wiring issues, replacing a battery, installing an automatic bilge pump, etc. All in good time, right?
Paul Miller has invited me to see Sandpiper in Cowichan Bay tomorrow morning and I'm looking forward to that. He's going to show me how he uses a power drill to help raise the sail.
I feel very lucky to have your interest and helpful suggestions.
Thanks again,

Elsie: Note how we try and get discussion group members to have a sign off that includes where the boat lies. It greatly aids getting answers or offers to come and see what your problem is .

Thanks Joe. It’s a good idea. I’ve been trying to add Maple Bay, BC to all of my sign offs. Must have missed one or two. Thanks again.
