Nonsuch Spring and Fall Racing Opportunity

The Off Soundings Club (offsoundings.org) runs Spring and Fall Race Series two weekends each year. There is a Nonsuch start and in recent years there have been up to 13 Nonsuchs on the line. PHRF handicapping is used so that all Nonsuch models and configurations can compete.

Racing occurs on Friday and Saturday. Overnight accommodations Friday and Saturday can be at a dock, mooring or your own anchor as your budget dictates. Some sail toward home from the finish line on Saturday.

Recent Nonsuch participants have come from as far as Cutyhunk Island, MA to the east and Branford, CT from the west.

The Spring Series is generally the second weekend in June. The start is east of Watch Hill (CT) Passage with a race in Block Island Sound and a finish in the vicintiy of the entrance to Block Island’s Great Salt Pond. Saturday’s race is usually around Block Island.

The Fall Series is generally the second weekend in September. Friday’s start is off of the Thames River (New London, CT) with a race to Greenport, NY. The finsih is in the vicinity of MOA (N) in Gardiner’s Bay. Staurday’s start and finsih are in the vicintiy of Friday’s finish with racing inside Gardiner’s bay.

There are shore parties each day after racing. On Friday evening after the shore party, both spring and fall, the Nonsuch Fleet has a group dinner at a local restaurant.

We welcome new Off Soundings Nonsuch participants and look forward to seeing you there.

Please let me know if you desire to participate. My contact info is in the Nonsuch Directory.

This is really interesting. Thank you. At the International Nonsuch Rendezvous this July, hosted by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club and Mimico Cruising Club, both of Toronto, we organized one day of course racing on Lake Ontario and another two point-to-points. The course racing counted 13 boats. It was great, friendly competition. There are several races series that Nonsuches could join on Lake Ontario but mostly, they don’t. Having been one of the co-chairs of the Rendezvous, I am interested in how many Nonsuch owners wold be interested in casual but competitive racing. The Lake Ontario Association (LONA) is looking at its 2025 calendar and races could be organized if there were sufficient interest. Personally, I think the Nonsuch is a great boat to race without the kind of yelling competition that occurs in racing one-design fleets. Anyone interested, please add to this post or get in touch directly.

Hi Nick,
I really enjoyed the racing last year at the Rendezvous, so I would definitely race again.

Hope you’re doing well. Let’s get out for dinner with the ladies!
