Spring/Early Summer Regattas in Long Island area

Hello -

I am planning to sail from Baltimore to Block Island in the Spring of 2023. This will take me up the Chesapeake Bay, through the C&D Canal, down the Delaware Bay to Cape May, up the NJ coast to Staten Island, through NYC and out into the LI Sound. I’m planning to do this over several long weekends to make this a fun voyage and still keep my job!

I’m wondering if there are any regattas/meetups/etc where a lot of other Nonsuches attend that I should try to work into my schedule.

For the trip back, I might beeline it from Montauk to Cape May for a 250nm 2.5 day sail to make some time back towards home.

If anyone has any suggested stopovers, marinas they know along the way, etc I’d appreciate any advice.

Thanks -

Bob, very interesting. I plan to go south in the fall.
We have a catboat rendezvous mid July, but I am the only Nonsuch, mostly traditional cats. Still a ton of fun.

I have a mooring in Newport ,you could raft. And a daughter in Fells Point so I am familiar with Baltimore. Would be great to exchange knowledge and info

It’s about 13 hours from Chesapeake City to Cape May. I anchored just inside the Cohansey River on the north side of the Delaware River to break the leg into two segments.

In the spring of 2020, I went from Cape May to Montauk in my N26U in 36 hours. Combination of sailing and motoring in fair weather conditions. For what it’s worth.

Yes, it’s a matter of timing the tide running through the c&d canal so that you get most of the outgoing tide through the canal and down the Delaware if you’re going to Cape May.

Bob,

You are headed toward the premier Nonsuch racing on the East Coast. The Off Soundings Club (offsoundings.org) conducts their Spring Series typically the second weekend after Memorial Day. There are always 10 - 13 boats. The mix is typically 30s & 33s with an occasional 26 & 36.

The venue is Watch Hill, RI to Block Island on Friday and around Block Island on Saturday.

The racing is conducted under PHRF. The Nonsuch Class is started and scored as a fleet.

We can get you set up as a guest member so that you can participate.

Debbie, I believe we bought your excellent Long Island Cheesecake 30 years ago for taking cruising. We are now old and have a Nonsuch 26 at the Wickford YachtClub as a retirement boat. Am considering Spring off Soundings.
