Nonsuch stencil

Does anyone have a stencil for a nonsuch? I am looking for a simple line drawing of a Nonsuch in profile view.

Thanks

Or do you need the rig too?

Nice sketch. Do you have dimensions that we could use to carve half-hulls?

This is from a crude 3D surface model that I used to 3D print a 1/20 scale model of my N26 hull. It’s simple as in no details especially the deck. I would not vouch for its accuracy but it looks OK. Using a 3 axis CNC router this model would make a nice half model or it could be virtually sliced (parallel to the waterline of course) to the wood plank thickness then cut out, stacked up and carve away manually the traditional way…

.

My 3D printer is not large enough to print a 1:20 scale model in one go so I had to print it in 4 sections. When I was finishing it I used non compatible primers and warped the model in the photo so I might try it again. This model is 15 inches long and is by far the largest object I have printed.

A 3D printed half model would be easy(er) than carving but then you loose that varnished wood grain aesthetic. However a 1:25th scale half hull print is definitely on my to do list for next winter (or this summer if we can’t go sailing).

The ultimate goal would be an RC model but for that I wouldn’t use the scale keel and rudder.

For those who want a half hull and do not want to build one I have two names, one in the US and one in Canada who do nice work. Email me if you are interested

Hi Tom, This is fantastic. Having the rig would be nice too. There is a story behind this. My Nonsuch spent many years on the hard neglected. I have put a good deal of cosmetic work into it over the last few years so she is starting to look like someone actually cares for her. The section of cabin sole closest to the sink was delaminated and broken up. The rest of the cabin sole actually looks pretty good from 5 feet away. My solution is to cut a piece of good plywood to fit into that space and put a simple drawing of a Nonsuch 26 down in paint, then varnish the whole thing. I am looking forward to seeing the end result. Thanks for getting me part way there.

Randy, do you know that Teak and Holly plywood is still available? If you google it you will likely find a source near you.
Just a thought.

That sounds artistic. But here some views. I have not drawn a sail yet.

Hi Randy
Your solution to repairing just a part of the teak and holly sole should be very cost effective compared to the alternatives… and really personalize your boat. I am presently replacing Misty Cat’s cabin sole, and refinishing a lot of the other interior solid and veneered teak, so I have some thoughts about your project. If you don’t mind, here’s a suggestion for your new sole panel and graphic:

If you use, say marine grade Meranti plywood to match your existing floor thickness (mine is 12 mm) it can be finished with Cetol natural teak to approximate the colour of teak in your sole (you may use more than one coat to darken it enough. If you were to use, for example, the Nonsuch silhouette logo that appears on our sails, you could get a vinyl sign shop to cut you a frisket - that is a stencil with low tack stickum you can apply to the finished plywood. You simply paint into that, then remove it. You can get a digital file of that logo - see the INA 'News and Tips/Builder decal page: https://nonsuch.org/members/articles-and-tips/8930718. (Or any appropriate line artwork can be converted to a vector file which is what the sign-cutter needs.)

After painting your graphic put a protective clear coat(s) over the whole panel - gloss or satin to complement the rest of your floor.

(I am experimenting on interior ‘wooded’ teak with Cetol for colour and Interlux Gold Spar Satin Varnish for top coats and liking the results).

I look forward to seeing your results in this forum. Have fun!

Hello Greg,

Thank you for your interest in my project. I really appreciate your suggestion to stain the plywood, that step would have occurred to me after I had put on the clear coat.

I am now looking for a source for marine plywood that is close to Buffalo, New York. We will see how I make out.
