As summer draws to a close and we prepare to put our Nonsuches away for another season, I wanted to reach out to members and prospective members about getting together for a fall dinner. Instead of braving the weather in the middle of February during the Boat Show [where we were forced to cancel due to storms] we felt it might be more appropriate to try and schedule a get-together at a time where sailing is concluded and the weather is hopefully more accommodating.
That said, we have tentatively reserved the Lounge at the Armdale Yacht Club in Halifax on Friday, November 8 for dinner. They have offered us a limited selection menu of:
Fish and chips
Burger and fries
Club Wrap and salad
Mushroom Ravioli and Garlic Toast
To cover a room rental we propose to charge $30 a person for the menu selections (which would include tax and gratuity). Any drinks would be over and above this amount.
We are pleased to announce that we will have a presentation from Syd Dumaresq on behalf of the Mahone Islands Conservations Association. (https://mahoneislands.ns.ca/). As many of you are aware who have sailed in Mahone Bay in the last few years, MICA as part of its mission has placed many moorings around islands that they own or manage for the province or local municipalities. One day at Bella Island we stayed on one of the three moorings MICA has placed there and were joined by two other Nonsuch 30s! More details on MICA, its mission and the moorings will be provided by Syd Dumaresq. We look forward to an interesting and informative presentation.
We are actively looking at additional presentations that we might try and fit into the evening. Further details will follow. I plan to provide details about the INA Rendevouz that was held in Toronto this past July. My wife Linda and I attended the event as fly-ins. It was a great success and a wonderful opportunity to see many other Nonsuch owners and see and sail on their boats. I met Bob Gehrman who is the new INA president and while I don’t expect he can attend the dinner (as he lives in the United States) he has told me a sail to Nova Scotia in his N36 is on his personal radar (having seen some recent posts on FB “Nonsuch Sailors and Enthusiasts”)
In order for us to secure AYC as a venue we need to have some sense of how many people would likely be attending the event. If possible can you reply to me at nonsuch.ns@gmail.com to confirm your interest in attending and how many others will accompany you. At present we have not discussed with the caterers whether they can accommodate persons with any specific dietary requirements. We can make inquiries if requested.
We hope to have an interesting evening reconnecting with friends, hearing about sailing adventures (or misadventures) as well as learning more about MICA.
