PHRF-LO

Hello fellow Nonsuchers, I asked the PHRF handicapper at my club for a certificate for Katmando. He asked me to give him the measurements of the Headboard (HB), the Girth Middle (MGM) and the Girth Upper (MGU) . I have a regular Nonsuch 30 sail. Does anyone out there have these numbers and what is a headboard anyway?

Thanks Guys

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

HB = 24’
MGM = 14.3’
MGU = 7.9’

These measurements are for a stock boat with a standard sail and 3 blade autoprop.

PHRF = 168

For what it is worth I believe the PHRF I was given is too low. I base this on other boats from other areas in the US and larger Nonsuch. Good Luck with the racing.

Hi

I believe HB, headboard is in the order of 6" not 24 feet !!!

He needs to measure the sail or have it measured at the locations
specified in the Nonsuch book.

Allen,

You are quite correct, the HB is in inches. I gave the measurements of the foot.

The information provided to me by Arthur Langley suggests an average
rating for a Nonsuch 30 is 186. 168 sounds tough for a boat that won't
carry a spinnaker.

It appears that the design of the Nonsuch makes it difficult for the
PHRF folks to come up with a fair number. Any system where you apply
for a certificate and have to leave a large percentage of the
requested numbers blank, obviously is not taking into account all the
important factors. As we all know, the Nonsuch is not a light air
boat. If the world was a perfect place to race sailboats, the
handicap should vary with the average wind speed. Sailing in Florida,
I frequently have to put up with light air days with winds from 5-10
knots. Boats with ratings 80 points less than me go wizzing by in the
light air while I feel like I'm just wallowing. Once the breeze picks
up to 15 knots or so, then it becomes a race. My West Florida PHRF
rating for my Nonsuch 26 SD with a two bladed fixed prop is 256. I
have light 21 footers passing me all day long when its light air. If
a decent breeze isn't in the forecast, I just stay away from the race
course. I may have to man-up and buy a folding prop to be more
competitive.

The PHRF rating for my 30 (shoal draft) is 180 with a folding prop here in Eastern NC. It’s unusual for me to be less then 3rd in just about any race. With the tall mast, we tend to get the winds aloft better then shorter rigs. However, going to windward in light air is troublesome. I didn’t have a chance with the fixed two blade that came with the boat. I lost 3 seconds on my rating, but gained so much more in speed.
