Hello all,
An unofficial raft up suggestion has been discussed by a few fellow Nonsuchers. Date , Saturday Aug 31, 2024 in Oyster Bay NY. Details to develop once an idea of how many boats are interested. So far there are four Nonsuch owners wanting to meet up.
Basically, a raft up with tours of each others boats, cocktails and dinner aboard your respective yachts will be the plan. Depending on interest, a large mooring would be made available for rafting and individual ones for those wanting to break off later. Anchoring is of course possible with a raft up as well.
If the idea interests you, pls drop a note here or a question to me email direct and let’s see if we can’t start up an old Nonsuch tradition.

Pls see chart above with raft up anchorage , and links to Sagamore Yc and Oyster Bay Marine Center (OBMC) below . I’m in conversation with OBMC to potentially have a single large mooring for the raft up and then options for visiting yachts to either anchor overnight or reserve their own mooring which comes with launch and showers. The Long Island RailRoad from Manhattan last stop is at the end of the marina if you have any city folks wanting to come out for the day . There is a waterside bar (Coopers Bluff) at OBMC with burgers. Provisions, fuel and ice are all local and easy to obtain. A good hardware store and numerous levels of restaurants are just in town. Tabby’s makes a nice breakfast and I think the better burger in town but if you’re a foodie, Wild Honey , 2 Spring or Stellina are superior choices. ( all a short 15 min level ground walk from the waterfront marinas) I can assist with any specific needs during your visit. (my car is there).
In addition, a link to local eateries in the event you wish to stay a few days. Oyster Bay is a small quaint town , famous for being the home town of President Teddy Roosevelt and with step back in time. Town is a short walk, Teddy’s house a short Uber ride.
With any luck, see you in Oyster Bay. Best Gary / Aloki.
Gary - do I have it right - Billy Joel’s (old) house is on Moses Point? If one is into motorcycles, Billy’s motorcycle collection is open for public viewing in town. Hopefully he has not moved it to Florida.
“OB” is my wife’s favorite place to anchor. We have put it on our calendar and hope to make it.
Hi Lloyd, you are correct . Billy Joel’s house (he just sold it) is on Mosses Point. He kept his down east boat ‘Alexa’ at Oyster Bay Marine Service as well as ‘Vendetta’ . Beautiful boats. He was just one of the guys at the yard , chatting with everyone and anyone. He was a great supporter of bay men and harbor conservation. He will be missed in oyster bay.
And yes, Billy’s motor cycle collection is still in town. It’s worth a trip as some of the bikes are quite rare and it’s free. Link and map related to OBMC attached.
Please see attached town map with items of interest. I did not list every item on the map as it’s quite concentrated between the letters B & E. There’s a Chinese restaurant and a liquor store in that stretch as well.
Re - Peter’s Q about moorings. As we have four , maybe five boats that have noted they would attend, I think an anchor (mine) will be sufficient for a daytime raft up. If weather permits, overnight or break off and anchor or reserve a mooring. OBMC is receptive to answer with a launch from the raft up or anchor to the OBMC docks. (a small fee is under discussion)
I am waiting to hear back about a ‘raft up mooring ‘ from OBMC but you are certainly welcome to reserve a mooring for yourself via OBMC directly. ( www.OBMC.com) .

This sounds like a great idea, and we love Oyster Bay and all it has to offer!
We are not currently able to commit due to schedules that are constantly in flux at the moment, but if we can, we would love to join! I will advise as soon as we know either way.
Best regards,
Peter Grabow
