Reefing line size

FATE has the standard 3/8 inch reefing lines. I’m interested in making it easier to hoist the sail after it’s been reefed. I know some folks have reduced the size of the reefing line to reduce friction. On a Nonsuch 30, what did you use? 5/16? How much did it help and is there any downside?

Does anyone have experience with reefing line size reduction? I have a 26 Classic and the existing lines / manual recommends 5/16". Thanks

I think a line that has minimal stretch and 2000 lb rating is what you need. Some of the more exoitc lines in 1/4 would work. Mike Q sold me mine, red and blue and they work very well. Off hand I can not recall the brand/type/size. It is definitely smaller than 5/16

Stay with original that has worked for me some 18 yrs . Small may not hold in your rope clutches
