SpeedSeal Raw Water Pump Cover

Good day,

My effort to replace the impeller on my W21 has led me down a bit of a rabbit hole. Removing Removing the raw water pump cover on the W21 was a real PITA, so I looked in the archives and saw the suggestion that you should replace the cover with one from SpeedSeal to made life easier. My Current pump is a JMP JPR-WB08IP - that must have replaced the original Sherwood or whatever some years ago. I tracked down SpeedSeal, and they refer you to Parts4Engines in the UK. They have nothing for Westerbekes, or JMP, or Sherwood, etc.

Has anyone gone this route in the past few years and know what kit might work? The archive postings on this were very old.

(the current impeller actually looks OK, so the poor water flow problem is probably something else, but as long as the cover is off…)

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon - I have a speedseal on my NS30. It is convenient as far as taking off the impeller cover. Instead of bolt heads there are textured round heads on the cover. I wouldn’t say it’s a game-changer. That said, the company is no longer around so they’re not available for purchase unless you find one on ebay.

Yes, that’s what I thought too, SpeedSeal is out of business. However, at my mechanics suggestion, I modified my pump by installing two studs on the pump body so you can more easily put the cover back in place. Then reinstall the screws, and nuts on the studs. I believe the screws are metric on the Westerbeke. I cut the heads off some metric screws to make the studs, and installed them in the pump with some Loctite. You’ll also have to buy some metric nuts, get extras in case you drop them when installing pump cover.

I was happy to find the the previous owner had installed a speedseal. The only downside is that the o-ring that comes with an impeller kit from Westerbeke doesn’t fit the speedseal. I was able to order replacements from parts4engines.com but I had to e-mail them to find out what to order. They were responsive and given they were shipping from the UK, prompt. Be sure to carry spare o-rings. They won’t be at the hardware store.

Thanks for that advice. I just sent the pump cover plate dimensions off to those folks so they could find the appropriate match. They seemed very responsive. I am hoping it will arrive before any hard freeze (the current pump has the cover off…).
