In two weeks I am sailing in my N33 home to Maine. The former owner is not really a sailor and I’m new to the Nonsuch. Is there anyone in the area who could show me some of the finer points of the rigging , adjustments, furling, etc?
The idea is to stay outside if the weather cooperates- St.A to Beaufort, NC, to Cape May, NJ, to Cuttyhunk , MA.
If the weather is iffy we will follow parts of the ICW, but I have done that several times (mostly boring and load under motor) and I want to save time.
Nick: If you’re forced into the ICW due to weather or hunger near Oriental, don’t hesitate to contact me. I can normally find you a free slip for the night.

If you go to www.Nonsuch.org, log in with your member information, and click on the MEMBERS tab, there are two options there that will help you find additional people to reach out to:
Select REGIONAL DIRECTORS, and you’ll get the contact information for Larry Koenig, who heads the South Florida Nonsuch Association regional affiliate
Select DIRECTORY/REGISTRY, and you’ll get taken to a page that helps you search for INA members who meet various criteria. If you look at the page, you’ll see the words: “Advanced search…” in light green lettering. Click on that, and you’ll see a form that gives you search options, one of which is STATE/PROVINCE. Use that option to restrict your search to “IS FL” and you’ll get a list of the 19 INA members who are registered as being in Florida. You can click on any of them to send email to get in touch.
Sorry. It’d be simpler to post the information than this description of how to get it. I’m doing it this way because it’s not responsible to post people’s contact information on the internet without their permission.
Thanks for pointing out the “Advanced Sesrch”. I had been looking down the list, hoping to see from the home port what state people are in. Larry Koenig will no doubt be a good source. Thanks for your help.
Nick,
Welcome to the Nonsuch 33 community in the INA.
If your journey with Sugar takes you into the Chesapeake Bay I can offer my advice and suggestions for local sailing here. My N33 lies in Deltaville, Va. Normally I’d be available to assist you on your journey but my calendar is getting filled fast.
Interestingly, I have assisted another N33 new owner a few years ago bringing it up from Florida. Furthermore, during a stopover in St Augustine I met up with the last owner of your boat who had just purchased it and got the tour of it as well. Very nice boat.
Looking forward to your updates as you make the trip.

Thanks for the note! It seems like Christal met quite a few people as she was acquiring the boat. She ended up living on it in a slip and only sailed it a few times.
I hoping, if the weather cooperates this time, to sail from Beaufort NC across to Cape May. If not, we (crew of 3) may come up the Chesapeake and see you!
Before I leave for the sail east I will have added a radar, replaced all the electronics(which were very dated or non-functional), upgraded to LiFePo4 batteries with a new smart charger, put up solar panels and added a windlass. New head pump and a seal for the Whale Gusher as well. Sails are in very good shape but I’ll have to replace the running rigging in the not too distant future.
I will post as we progress.
Joe Valinoti- I am coming through Oriental because the cheekblock for the choker failed. We are motoring up from Beaufort on Sunday. I’m hoping to have a new block shipped to the Nonsuch store, or, if better, perhaps to you.
My number is 207-272-4956.
Forgive me if I’m not responding well via email due to some email problems. Also, this is a big race week-end in Oriental. Look at the cruising guide for info on the two free docks in Oriental harbour. What is the name of your boat?? You’re welcome to use my house address to send the parts. 5309 Bogue Drive. How long do you plan to stay?? I can probably put you up for free in my YC, but it’s 3 miles to town, whereas the free town docks are a short walk to everything including 2 marine stores and West Marine.
That would be great if I could use your address for shipping. I am hoping to spend Sunday night and Monday night in Oriental. I have stayed before at the town docks- very convenient. At the time , 7 years ago. I had a failed transmission and a new one was installed at Deatons, a great yard. Assuming I could get the block on Monday (thanks Amazon!)
I would like to remove the failed hardware from my carbon fiber mast to prevent hangups and chafe. Ideally, I could remove the 4 Philips head fasteners, but, but, failing that, I might have to get a power tool to cut a couple of s.s. rivets. I don’t have a bosuns chair and have been using a double bowline. If it seems necessary I would like to find a local riggers who could help.
I guess I should contact West and the other marine stores(do you have their names?) to see if anyone has a suitable block.
There is a chandlery, The Provision Company 252 249-1797 right up the street from the free docks with an assortment of rigging. West Marine has a goodly amount but not as knowledgeable 252 249-3200.What is the name of your boat??
