Stanchion bases

I have just completed a major update/restoration to the topsides of my 1981 30C which included new gel coat to the enitre topsides. Everything on the top of the boat has been removed and I now am faced with reinstalling every piece of hardware etc. that was removed to complete the work.

That is if I can get over having to step on this pristine new finish and then…have to drill holes in it!

The stanchion bases show their age and short of replacing all 10 of them at a cost of around $90 USD each I wonder if they can be cleaned up/renewed, etc. Does anyone know what the stanchion bases are made of? Any one refurbished or refinished them?

Has any one replaced their salon hatch with a new one from Atkins & Hoyle? It appears to me form the A&H web site that the replacement model is their XR200 but I have not yet contacted them to confirm. Is that the replacement?

Also, has anyone had their salon hatch rebuilt by Atkins and Hoyle?

I am sure I am going to have many similar questions going forward with this project and any suggestions/assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I am in the same boat (except it is smaller). I costed out refinishing the old chromed bronze ones for my 1681 26C and found it was far cheaper to buy stainless new ones based on costs in Ontario this winter.

Re the hatches, I only replaced the acrylic plastic (due to UV crazing) on the main hatch rather than the whole thing. Can’t you do the same for the saloon hatch. Piedmont Plastics will provide a new piece if you loan them the old one as a template. They are doing some work for me and another 26er next week.

I can’t help you with the stantions but if you’re talking about your hatch in in the cabin roof, I’ve rebuilt all five of mine on my 33. A company in East Norwalk Conn called Select Plastics is the place to go to reglaze and replace the sealing strips on your Atkins and Hoyle hatches. Sending them to Atkins and Hoyle will cost you a fortune. And you don’t want to try and reglaze it on your own. Select Plastics does a great job.

David,

On Mariah my 26C also built in 1981, I just picked a Lumar hatch of the same size form Defender and did a little grinding and a new hatch with built in ventilation.

David,

Just finished a total rehab on the decks. We replaced the Atkins Hoyle with a Lewmar Offshore. They make one model with a flat mounting plate so the refit was easy.

As to stanchion bases. Our old ones were chrome plated bronze. Switched them all out for stainless.

Thanks Tim

I will look into the Lewmar option.

I think the replacement stanchion bases I found on the Rig Rite web site are stainless. Which brand did you install?
