Synthetic teak cockpit addition

I remember discussion, I think, on this blog regarding synthetic teak used as a decorative topping for the cockpit seating. I’ve seen recently some higher grade synthetic teak which has caught my eye. Still in the thought process on the subject. Considerations of weight and cost and aesthetic. Below is a link . Thoughts welcome.regards, Gary/ Aloki ns30329 /oyster Bay ny

Gary,

I’ve looked into it in the past, and thought it looked better than any of the competition on paper, However, I didn’t pull the trigger so I don’t have any experience with outcomes.

When I was going synthetic for eyebrow replacement on my previous Nonsuch, I got samples of Flexiteek’s synthetic wood trim, and was very impressed. If the flooring is to the same standard, then it’d be pretty good.

The trim looked much better than PlasTeak and would’ve been much easier to work with. Unfortunately, I’d already put in PlasTeak handrails and the color match between the two competing product lines wasn’t good, so I had to stay with PlasTeak. For that reason, if you’re considering any other synthetic teak for your boat, I’d strongly recommend planning to stay with one manufacturer for everything.

If you go for it, I hope you’ll post how it went.

Every time we look at the teak, we shudder at the thought of taping/masking/staining 2x a year.
We’ve done what we can to stick with starboard for any upgrades and additions. …but you just can’t do that to eyebrows or handrails.

Plasteak is very intriguing. Is there a CDN source?

Handrails seem fairly straightforward. Is there a standard way to describe the order? # of loops, distance between loops?

Eyebrows: is it just stock 1"x0.5" lengths? HTF do you get those big bends to match the coach house?

Bottom line: Who’s done this already? What would you have done differently? Warnings?

We genuflect to the greater knowledge of the INA collective;)

Cheers,
