Transmission clattering at low engine RPM

We took our NS30U for a short trial sail for the first time yesterday. We immediately noticed a clattering sound from the V-drive (Hurth V150) at engine speeds below 1000 RPM when in forward gear. Above 1000 RPM the sound went away.

We are trying to determine if this is normal or not. I believe the noise may be associated with back lashing of the transmission gears or slipping of the clutch plates.

I would appreciate hearing anyone who has experienced the same clattering noise when in forward gear at low engine speeds.

Thank you,

Mike

Regretfully, my suspicion is that your drive plate (sort of like a clutch plate in a car) has broken springs. If so, the only repair is to replace it by separating the tranny from the engine. When mine was done (in the water), they made some minor cuts to the wood and or glass forward of the trans. to facilitate it’s removal.
