transmission leak

I was motoring hard today and watch trans oil drip quite nicely from the shift lever. I assume this is the source of my leak.
My marina mechanic took a look at it this week and said it was coming from my V drive but they did not run the engine.
Any suggestion as to how to repair the shaft seal myself first before I undertake an unnecessary and expensive repair?
Thanks,

Bill: This is a link to the Hurth 150 transmission. From reading it, in chapter 6, it appears that the shift lever cover plate can be removed and a new seal fitted. (albeit carefully)

I replaced the shifter shaft seal about 6 years ago. It was relatively easy to do as I recall. Disconnect the linkage, remove the plate, press out the old seal, press in the new one, put the plate back on ( can’t recall if it needed at gasket), the replace the linkage. No more seeps from the shaft since then.

I did this probably 10 years ago and noticed last weekend that it is dripping again. Was pretty easy to do, but the one thing to remember is to score with a sharp object the shift lever where it attaches to the shaft that comes out of the tranny. That way you know how to line it all back up again when you reassemble and can shift with confidence.

good luck.

You do not have to drain the oil to do this … however the “green” rimmed seals that some Hurth dealers sell do not work you need to get the gray ones. Take the old seal and the shaft to any bearing shop and they can match it…Got mine from Marysville Marine as I recall, the 3 I got from Anthony Keets did not fit tightly enough. Suspect they are for the newer Hurth ZF models…

Thank yoy

I have the manual for this transmission, The shaft seal is
