Vdrive fluid leak

I have a fluid leak coming from the shift lever on my Hurth Vdrive. I assume there is a seal there that has failed. Has anyone had the same problem? I’m hoping I don’t have to take the whole drive off to fix it.
Also, I believe the correct way to measure the fluid level is to check it with the dip stick in but not screwed all the way in. Is that correct?

Ryan,

I can tell you that your description of how to measure transmission fluid level is correct for the Hurth direct drive, so I’d expect it’s the same for the V-drive.

Note that we encourage people to sign their posts with their boat information and, when appropriate, location. The benefit is that it helps encourage answers from people with more specific knowledge and those close enough to offer help and local recommendations.

Ryan,
I had the exact issue of leaking at the shift lever on my hurth V-drive, it was a simple fix but I recall it was a radial sealing ring just behind the lever. Given I was away when this happened a mechanic visited the boat and installed it, I noticed in the manual that you should make sure the lever is removed and installed in the same position. In short I did not have to haul the boat to fix it.

That is correct for checking the level. There was a post several years back
on replacing that seal and it didn't seem too involved.

Ryan,

No, you do not need to remove the transmission for this repair.

If you remove the shift lever from the shifting shaft, you might be able to pick out the old seal. The new seal will drive in.
You may need to remove the side cover plate. You would then drive the old seal out from the inside.
I once procured this seal on Ebay. If you take the cover off you will need a cover gasket too.
The transmission instructions indicate how to properly align the cover plate. When reinstalling the shift lever, tighten it at the proper angle and there should be a small gap between the shift lever and the cover plate.
You can find the Hurth HBW 150V service instructions on line.
