Under sink plumbing valve question

Hi,
We purchased our boat without anyone really available to sort things out for us so I have a question or three.
Attached is a photo of a valve under the sink. Please tell me what it controls.
Thank you,

That’s the foot pump 3-way valve. 1 is the fresh water tank, 1 is the drain to the ice bin, and the outlet is to the sink above.

I’ve got the 3-way valve, some only have 2-way valves.

It controls the input to the manual pump (foot activated) in the galley area.

Ok - where your handle is now is either draining the icebox, OR getting water from the onboard tanks.
Turned 90 degrees, on mine, it takes water from outside (there is a small through-hull in the bilge area that is hard to see)
Turned 180 degrees, it’s the ice box drain, OR, the water thanks.

I never remember, but it’s easy, put a little bit of water in the ice box, pointing either forward or aft, give it a couple of pumps…

Oooop - Bob’s right - it’s the 2-way valve in your picture, not the 3-way valve. You’ll likely not have the through-hull in the bilge, so no way of (e.g.) rinsing dishes with salt water to save on fresh water.

I’ve attached a pic of the through-hull (since changed to a ball valve) that’s in the bilge that feeds the 3-way valve on Cat’s Whiskers. I don’t seem to have an in-focus pic of the 3-way valve I have - it looks very similar, but has 3 hoses underneath and 1 on the side, so 4 in total.

Apologies - John NS26C 046 Kingston ON.

Since I no longer use the icebox on board my 30U for ice and keeping things cold. I now use a separate ENGEL 12 volt refrigerator. The installed icebox is used for dry storage (including cans of beverages) and storing the bread maker. I plan to drop the hose from the ice box to the valve so it just drains into the bilge.

Your owner’s manual should address that, Jerry. If you don’t have one, you can download it from our website. I removed mine and plumbed the reefer directly to the foot pump and sink.

I did the same as Joe. My foot pump now only pumps the ice box into the sink. I didn’t like the idea of having my potable water supply connected to a hose that drained the waste water from the ice box.

FYI - here is a pic of the 3-way valve on our 26.

Ice-box, from through-hull and from internal tanks. 4 connections - 3 input, 1 for output.

Anyone else have a 26 like this? Sorry if the orientation is not correct - but you’ll get the idea.

I think these were pretty standard original equipment on the boat. My Nonsuch 26C manual, which I downloaded from the Nonsuch.org website when I bought my boat, shows it on the 59th page, but the diagram on that page is notated as being for Niagara 35s.

The manual advises switching back to fresh water and pumping enough through to clear the common hoses “in order to avoid contamination” after every time it’s used to clear ice box wastewater.

I have refrigeration, so ice box stuff not relevant.

Jerry

What boat do you have and where do you keep it, Jerry. Most of us have refrigeration. I don’t ever remember a reefer or icebox without a drain.

In that case, my advice would be to replace the hose leading from the footpump to its sink faucet because past owners’ use might have made it yucky, set the valve to draw freshwater, and then ignore it forever after. (Or, if you feel like doing more work, remove the valve and route the hoses directly.
