I’m the new owner of NS26#149 recently relocated from Chester, Nova Scotia to Collins Bay, Kingston, Ontario. A nonsuch newbie - so much to learn. Have been reading the great information sharing within this group the past couple of months. I’m very pleased to be part of the INA!
So here’s my question: I have what I assume is an original water tank (fwd, stbd) and am missing a threaded cap. The sister cap is stamped “Kracor” (see photo). I called Kracor in Illinois and they told me they don’t deal with retail issues. So, any ideas how I might get a replacement threaded cap? Is there a supplier in Canada?
Absent that, has anyone replaced their tank and has a spare Kracor cap that I might buy?
Appreciate any advice/comments.
Best regards, Neil Raynor

Hopefully, Neil, someone may have a cap left over from when they replaced their original tanks. BTW, yours is identical to mine.

PS – I’m sure you’ve looked down the sides of your tank to see if it slid down.
The Nonsuch Association offers tank replacement, including the water tank My 1987 NS26U’s aluminum tank failed two years ago. I actually spent a year sleuthing why I had fresh water in the bildge and then trying various products to repair it before ponying up the $600 (US) or so for a new 60 gal poly tank. It was a half day project to replace the tank and “Voila!” no more problems.
Working on memory here but I think I tried an ABS pipe plug just to see and it had a matching thread. I was looking for an easier to turn plug. Again from memory I didn’t use it because the protruding square top didn’t quite have clearance under the seat flat. As a last resort or a stopgap it’s worth a try.
The internal diameter is approx 3 1/2 inch (I don’t have it with me). As per the original photo on the top it is stamped “Kracor”. John from Saint John has told me he may have a spare . . . .
Thanks, Terry, if I may I’ll keep that kind offer in my back pocket. Ken Julian of Saint John may have a spare and is willing to part with it so looks like I have a solution.
But thanks again to you and the INA community. Good to be aboard.
I believe the threads are 3-8 (that is 3" and a 8 thread/inch pitch) and an ABS pipe fitting will thread in. But these ABS pipe fittings are tapered NPT threads and pretty sure the old Kracor cap is not (it seals on an O ring). If you tighten in an ABS cap from Home Depot you may crack the old brittle female fitting in your tank.
If one cap is missing I would suggest first looking over the sides of the tank because the cap could have fallen down there especially on the outside towards the hull. It is hard to see in there but a cell phone set to 5 second delay can take photos in places where you can’t easily get your head. If you find it there you may have to move the tank to get it out - be careful - the old pipe fittings welded into the tank on the end are fragile and you don’t want to stress or tighten these too much (the nipples/elbows are tapered NPT) or you crack the tank.
Thanks, Tom. I now have a replacement (pre-owned) Kracor cap courtesy of one of our great INA members which should fit the bill when I get down to the boat.
