Wishbone cheek blocks for clew reefing lines

Hello All- Has anyone replaced the cheek blocks on the aft wishbone for the clew reefing lines outhaul? My rigger recommends reducing friction with ball bearing cheek blocks, but I wonder if there are replacements that fit the holes.

Thanks,

I have the same question. I looked at mine this weekend when I replaced the reefing line and it needs replaced. Thanks,

Hi William and John,

I replaced mine with Garhauer blocks this year ordered direct. The holes matched the original except I had to have the holes on the new cheek blocks drilled about a sixteenth larger to match the bolts. Perhaps Garhauer could do that for you if you gave them the info. Drilling the stainless is not easy!!
Mike Quill is also a source.
Google both for more info.

you don’t happen to know which cheek block you ordered? Thanks. My cheek block has 4 Philips head bolts I assume.

Thanks,
Bill Evans

Bill,

I don’t have the stock number right now but will forward it later today.
If you call Garhauer and give them the dimensions of the cheek block they can identify it.
There are 4 Phillips head bolts, as you mentioned. You have to have the holes on the cheek block re-sized to match those bolts. You will reuse the same bolts as well as the curved plate that fits on the wishbone.

John, who is your rigger?

Thank you Larry.

The Garhauer wishbone cheek block No. is 30-21SB . You will need 3 @ 36$ each.

Larry

If you tell Garhauer what size bolt you are using i am sure that they can make the holes the appropriate size. Ask for Guido…

Great thanks

Hi John,

I agree with Larry Jack. Garhauer 30-21SB (just looked up my records). A year ago I paid the same $36 apiece as he did. I was concerned about the bolt hole alignment so Garhauer emailed me the schematic for the block to check teh spacing between the bolt holes. A perfect fit/replacement for the original Garhauers that were 25 years old. I was astonished that I got the bolts out with no difficulty after all that time! A little TefGel on the bolt threads and back in they went!

Garhauer is terrific to work with, and their product is excellent!

I agree that Garhauer are great quality and for appearance and totally appropriate on a Nonsuch. I have replaced several older blocks with new Garhauer and am very satisfied.

But I haven’t replaced the wishbone cheek blocks because of the back plates on the originals. Mine have enormous backs with a large radius on the sides which allows the line to smoothly wrap around the boom to go up to the cringle. Are all originals like this? The new 30-21 does not have this plate. It seems like it is needed so the line does not wrap around a sharp edge.

Any opinions? Or can my plate be possibly used along with a new 30-21 block?

Fred and John,

This curved ‘adaptor plate’ is not part of the new block – it is re-used with the new block on top of it.

The third cheek block I replaced was at the mast for the choker.

Larry,
this is probably a dumb question but… may I assume the Phillips head bolts on the cheek block (which I believe are stainless steel) are screwed directly into the wishbone that is aluminum? So I assume the wishbone was tapped and there are no nuts to fiddle with?
I just wanted to know what I will be dealing with when I unbolt ( unscrew) the for bolts holding the cheek block.

Thanks,

Bill: Yes, they are tapped into the wishbone. If those screws do not come out easily (use a good screwdriver) soak them and then tap on the heads to loosen them. You may need an impact screwdriver. Re-install with TefGell® on the threads.

Thank you so much!. Yes I have an impact and some Tgel handy.

You are right, Bill. The wishbone is tapped. Good advice from Joe – be sure to use a good release agent and let it sit for a while. Be careful not to damage the heads. Mine came out easy enough. I also used a product like TuffGell to prevent electrolysis.

Good luck,

Hi Ko- I mentioned that my rigger is Atlantic Spars in Annapolis. Actually, they have a shop as well at Herrington Harbor North right near you. The two branches work closely together. I haven’t been out sailing since the Fourth of July weekend. Too hot and humid. How about you?

John

Sorry for my personal email sent to the group.

Hey John,

Good to know about Atlantic Spars. Now that you mention it, I have seen their signs. I’ll stop by tomorrow when I’m at the boat.

I haven’t been sailing since the weekend before the 4th, though I have been to the boat twice since, working on projects and appreciating the AC. Hope to sail tomorrow eve.

What did you guys ever do about the sail cover?
