Replacing reefing cheek blocks on the wishbone

My wife and I had a great sail in between bad weather on our NS26C, in Friday Harbor, WA, reefing the sail for the first time. I had a difficult time in pulling in the clew, but did manage a reef.

When we docked, I looked at the sheaves on both cheek blocks - they were definitely falling apart.

The base on the cheek block is 3.5" long, 2" wide. The manufacturer doesn’t seem to be in business anymore.

Do any of you know where I can find replacements?

Howard,

I replaced same on our N26C this spring. Mike Quill supplied quality replacement and were installed by yard.

Garhaeuer also has a direct replacement for those cheek blocks, #30-21SB

They are in the US so shipping could be less. I just paid $36.00US for the block and shipping to St. Louis, MO was $8.30, this was in August of this year.

Anyone know if the 30s take the same size cheek blocks?

Howard,
one thing to watch for is that the backing plate on the block matches what you currently have. Some have a flat backing plate and some have a stepped backing plate. I took a quick look at Mike Quill’s site. He did not have a picture of the wishbone boom reef cheek blocks for the 26 but he did for the 22. The ones shown for the 22 have a flat back. Here is the link the_stores.html . You have to scroll down a ways to find them. Garhauer 25 cheek blocks have the stepped back. Here is the link. cheek-block-25-22-sb.html I can’t remember if the blocks on La Reina are 25’s. They are Garhauer.

Check to see what you have on your boom before you talk to Mike or Garhauer. Both of them are very knowledgeable and will know what you need. IF possible measure the bolt spacing on your existing blocks.

Garhauer is located in California and Mike is located in Ontario.

I just purchased https://www.garhauermarine.com/cheek-block-25-22-sb.html for my wishbone and the screws are not quite a match. Off by 1/4 in width wise. The length is perfect.

I have many garhaeuer blocks, they are very good…

Hi Val, Thanks for that info. How are you going to get around that? The cheek blocks are old Miramen (spelling?) hardware, flat base with what looks like teak blocks to make the blocks fit on a curved surface of the wishbone. I’ll call up Mike tomorrow and see what he can do for that.

Val - A question:

Is the distance between holes (widthwise) on the Garhauer block 1/4" too little or 1/4" too much ? I’m just curious.

Here are a few pictures (a picture is worth a thousand words):

That does not look like the 30-21SB, close but no cigar. Maybe the blocks were different on the earlier NS26s. White O’morn is number 216 and that block was a direct replacement.

The ones you’re talking about are probably these ones, and the ones from Mike Quill lime up perfectly.

I called Garhauer on one occasion to get information and to place an order. I was impressed to discover that I was actually speaking to the lady that would be making the blocks for me. So if it’s not just a big warehouse full of inventory, and they operate on a produce as needed basis, then it may be possible that they would build that base to your specification. Worth a call.

Hi all,
I would like to replace my upper choker line. Does anyone know of a load spec needed
on this line for a 33’? Is a load chart available for all lines?
Thanks

I’ve never seen a line load chart for 33’s but my owner’s manual specs line size and type for all lines. Perhaps you could work backwards from those specs, if you have the manual.

Thanks Ken. I’ll give it a look next time I get to the boat.

The 33 manual is online. Looks like it calls for 12’ of 1/2 inch.

Howard,
Another option to consider is rebuilding the existing blocks. Merriments used rivets to hold the sheave . You can sometimes drill those out from the back and install a new sheave using a bolt with a shoulder.
