The spring which holds open one of the Atkins & Hoyle hatches on my
1985 Nonsuch Ultra popped off. I have tried but can't figure out how
to reinstall. I have called and emailed the company, but no response.
Can anyone please advise.
I had the same thing happen to me except one of the springs snapped. I
contacted A&H and they advised that they no longer stock parts for that
model port. Suggested I send it to them and they would 'refurbish' it. I
don't think it is practical to remove the entire port.
Perhaps someone has a few extra springs??? If so, would gladly purchase. The
question remains - how to install? Any thoughts?

The spring is not broken, but when the window/port was opened the
spring simply remained on the rod but lost its position and
"unsprung". I removed the rod holding the window but due to the fact
that the window cannot open all the way there appears to be no way of
reinstallation expect removal of the whole port. The screws on the
inside will not budge.

I’m confused as to what we’re talking about - hatch or port??

Hi John,
Attached are some photos of the side port spring. Note how the spring is attached to open port. Spring is listed on the Atkins & Hoyle price sheet.

Thanks Ed, I appreciate all your help however the spring is not broken. How do I reinstall it?
John
- With the port closed pass the rod through one set of holes until the rod reaches the other end of the port, but not through the other set of holes.
- Now open the port and gently pull the rod away just enough to slide the spring over it. Look at the photo I sent for proper orientation of the spring.
- Now slide the spring down until the spring is on the lip of the port and as close as you can to your starting point.
- Push the rod in to align it with the remaining rod holes and tap the rod into place.
- Close the port and you’re done. If you open the port and it doesn’t stay open, the spring is not in correctly.

Hi John,
I left one important thing out see #2.
- With the port closed pass the rod through one set of holes until the rod reaches the other end of the port, but not through the other set of holes.
- Temporally place a nail, ice pick or pin in the other set of holes so that side of the port doesn’t slump when it’s opened.
Close the port and you’re done. If you open the port and it doesn’t stay open, the spring is not in correctly.

Hi Ed, I reinstalled the spring as per your instructions, The spring continues to unwind after installation. I called atkins and the spring is no longer available. They suggest removing the entire port and sending it to them for a reffiting to a different type of hinge -$75. The screws holding it don’t budge. Either I live with it or I’ll try over the winter. Thanks again for your efforts. John
PS If anyone has these springs I will buy some from them.
Hi John,
Does your spring look like the one in the photo I sent? It would help if you can send me a photo of your spring and the inside lip of your port that the spring would attach to. This would confirm if the spring is good or broken. I think you’re missing the tip of the spring that attaches to the lip of the port. If so, the spring is pretty heavy you might be able to have a new tip welded on. So send photos if you can.
Getting the port out is a whole new story. If the aluminum screws are fused together it’s a lot of work. You’ll have to drilling the heads off the screws on one side and unbound the outer ring of the port. Good Luck.

Hi Ed, I thought of the welding idea and I have had boat items welded at a local shop. I will e mail a photo to you . I was trying to compare the problem spring to another one which is installed to see if the tip is broken. If it is broken it’s no more than a 1/16 at most. By the way the toll free number for Atkins is ng. John
The springs are available from Hammerhead Nautical Systems at 15$ each as per my e-mail of Feb.12. Contact www.hatchrepair.com The owner used to work for Atkins and Hoyle.

Sorry, email of Aug.12 !
Hi Ed, The springs are is fact available from Hammerhead Marine, I ordered three. The fellow was a pleasure to deal with When I receive them and install them I will get back to you. John
Does this Hammerhead Marine carry the 7” x 14” screens for the overhead A & H hatches located in the galley and head? Atkins & Hoyle wants an arm and a leg for theirs.
