Barient 23 Halyard Winch

My Barient 23 halyard winch is apart and clean. Looks to be in excellent condition including the springs. How necessary is it to replace the springs? Are they available for purchase.?

Bob,

If the springs are in good shape, there’s no reason to replace them. Don’t lose them!

I’ll be very interested in any replies you get to your question about sources of replacements. I’m still searching for a source for Barient 23 springs myself.

Thor Powell has suggested http://mcguiresprings.com/ as a place to get them custom made. I haven’t gotten to them yet, so can’t report on that.

Barient made several models and made some changes over the years. For most models, the spring on the right in the picture below is the appropriate one. It can be obtained (along with many other replacement parts) from Hutton in Australia, http://www.arco-winches.com/products/spares, sales@huttonwinches.com. Despite them being on the other side of the world, I’ve actually received stuff from them at lower prices and about as quickly as from U.S. vendors. I’ve been pretty impressed.

The problem is that, at least for some Barient 23s made in a certain time period, the spring used were actually the smaller one shown on the left. That’s what mine has. This picture is the unbroken one. The other one broke, turning a two speed winch into a one-speed. That winch is now sitting on a shelf, replaced by a Lewmar 30 that is spec’ed as a replacement, but with hindsight I feel is too small.

If anyone knows a source for these smaller springs, please post it. Hutton is great, but they don’t carry these.

I have a Barient 17 torn apart and cleaned in my kitchen. Will probably put it back together today. I bought a Lewmar Winch Service Kit #BK4512, CA$45. Comes with 10 pawls and 20 springs. I only wanted the springs, but I’ve got 2 Barient 22’s to service as well. The parts list for both the 17 and 22 have the same part numbers for the springs and pawls, and the 23 I saw online too.

The Lewmar springs are the same size as the Barients. The Lewmar pawls are 1mm shorter in length, but I’m sure they will work. My mast guy said, if needed, be sure to replace both pawls as a set because of the shorter length.
