Thanks again to everyone for sharing their experience. The Garmin 742 or 942 will be a definite addition. According to Garmin those units report on screen, Radar, wind speed and direction, VHF, weather, sonar and AIS. Does anyone have experience with all this info on one device? Has anyone added radar or wind speed and found it to be great …or could have lived without? Thanks again
Hi Ed,
Spring is here we are finally making plans to install the Garmin unit. There was a lot of great input from the group on this and really liked your install. On My 26C there is no room between the compass and top of the pedestal guard to fit the unit. We are planning on using an Edson 7 inch stainless clamp to mount it on the side. I saw Compass Marine, pbase.com, sells a pre-made starboard shelf and tall stainless guard that can be cut to size to modify. If you could share how you you installed the shelf that would be great. If anyone else has input very much appreciated. Thanks again
Here’s an option for the original lower guard rail. I got it as a stopgap while I decided on a more permanent solution and have decided to keep it. It snaps on very firmly but is easy to remove for security.
My pedestal guard is 54 in tall. I had a piece of starboard, bought the O-ring clamps, and a new binnacle guard. The Garmin is a 742 and it’s just a great size for my 26.
What he didn’t mention is that you have to cut and splice depth and network cables as fittings won’t go through the guard. It was an easy upgrade. Also buy a stainless tubing cutter, they cut like butter. A piece of bilge hose encloses the wires. Auto helm cable goes in same tube lower down.
I can sit on the back coaming and watch what my Helms person is doing. Notice in the picture I found a 24-inch wheel with leather cover for under $200 on eBay. Makes it much easier to get around the cockpit.
