Hi, I’m thinking of replacing my head mirror as it has some deterioration of the reflective material and scratches. The challenge is to remove it without having to remove and possibly damage the wood work.
Has anyone removed the mirror? Any tricks to doing this?
FWIW, The N30 (not the N30U) Nonsuch Shop Drawings on the website include one titled, “N30 Vanity Mirror.pdf”.
Although it’s a different shape, the notes on it say that it’s fastened with GE 1201 silicone. My guess is that’d be the same for your mirror as well, but it’s just a guess.
Thanks Fran, it’s beyond just cleaning. The headliner is contoured to accommodate the shape of the mirror. But, gluing a new one over top is an interesting idea. I will have to examine it more closely.
Although I’m pretty sure others have replaced their mirrors in the past. But they’re not on Discourse… Yet!
If yours IS attached with GE silicone, GE’s website says it can be removed with a razor or scraper. In the case of a mirror, my guess is that piano wire or fishing line might do the trick.
If that does work, cleaning the surface very thoroughly to remove all residue, and then going over with rubbing alchohol is what they say to do for putting new glue on afterwards.
I replaced mine a couple of years ago Don. I’ll see you in a couple of weeks at the rendezvous and tell you all about it. It’s really not hard at all. I went for a medicine cabinet and a small shaving mirror rather than a new giant mirror.
