Nonsuch Font/logo

Hi All -

I’m working on re-creating the Nonsuch logo on the outside of the cabin on both sides. Mine are pretty worn down.

2 Questions for the group:

  1. Does anyone know the name of the actual font they used? I’ve gotten pretty close with Adobe Bookmania and Century Old Style, but not perfect.

  2. Does anyone have a better example/picture of the two symbols on either side of the sail logo? I can’t tell what they are and I haven’t found them in any of the literature.

Thanks,

Hello Bob,

I do not know what the fonts are but have two replacement decals on our boat. They appear to be original. Unfortunately we are not able to get to the boat for some time. When we do get there I could scan them and send you the file.

Search the google group for “Nonsuch Decal for Cabin Side” and you will find one Jim K already did

Great find - Thanks!

Any idea what those little symbols are on each side of the sail? It looks like the NOAA symbol for Park Ranger Station, without the circle.

The logo we have in our INA records is the one provided by Jim Krzyzewski as shown in your posting. The jpg file I have looks a little clearer than your and I also have it in a PowerPoint. We were not successful in getting the source of this artwork attached.

Hi Bob,

I am including 3 attachments.

Attachment 1 is the file by which I recreated the logo. I imported a photo of the existing logo on my boat into PowerPoint, then used the freehand option in powerpoint to carefully draw over the photo and create the missing portions of the outline of the lettering. I had to go through a few other interactions after that to actually create each letter as objects. I also used a photo of lettering from one of Hinterhoeller’s publications as a reference to ensure I got the typestyle as close as possible to the original type font.

In attachment 2 (the original PowerPoint file that was used by the company that created the vinyl letters for me) on Slide 1 is the Nonsuch Logo with red outline on the letters which I used on my N30U Toyger. Please NOTE: the red outline makes it “non-original” (but i liked it).
Slide 2 shows the original Nonsuch Logo in all navy blue lettering.
Slide 3 shows the dimensions for the Nonsuch Logo based on the dimensions of the orginal on my boat.
The company that made the vinyl logo for me used the file I am sending you. They used the dimensions provided in that file.

Please note: On my 1st Nonsuch (22ft #16) which I bought new in 1985 the bottom part of the sail (under the wishboom) was red.
However the logo was all navy blue on the 1986 N36 and the 1987 N30U which I bought used in subsequent years. (I’m still a 1 boat owner)

Attachment 3: Regarding positioning the logo on Quickbeam, refer to the photo of the logo (port side). The steel ruler I was using was a 12” ruler and it was butted up to the forward end of the frame of the aft most port. So the last bit of the ‘h’ in Nonsuch was 4 inches forward of the frame of the aft most port. As for vertical placement I got that from butting the ruler up to the bottom of the teak ‘eyebrow’ trim that encircles the cabin top. You can get the dimensions from the photo.

As for color, I got color samples from the company that made the vinyl lettering for me and took it down to the boat to match. It was basically a navy blue.

If you need additional info please let me know. I also have the file in Keynote (Mac version of MS PowerPoint) as well as in a pdf file.
If you have any other questions feel free to give me a call.

Best regards,

Ted,

I’m glad you mentioned jpeg. I had forgotten that I converted it to that format.
Do you think we could post the jpeg of the logo along with the one of the dimensions as reference material on the INA site?
I think I answered the question as to the source of the file in my response to Bob.
Having it on the INA site as reference material they could download would make it easier for people in the future when they needed to replace damaged or faded logos in the future.

Cheers!

Hi Bob,

I believe those symbols were for vertical and horizontal reference for mounting. (my best guess)
They were part of the logo on my N30 when I bought it and just included them when I recreated the logo.
I don’t remember them being on the N22 or N36 I had.
I believe they are NON-Standard and should not be included with the logo if you want it to be original.

Cheers!

I finally got around to checking the logos. There is one on each side of the cabin without the small bowtie shaped ditto marks. There is a third one on the stern with the bow ties. I think the bowties are there to wink at the sloops as we sail past climbing to windward. I know, they don’t get used as much as I would like.
