NS30 Spar Weight

Does anybody know the weight of the mast in a NS 30? I am guessing close to half ton. Reason is our club’s mast crane has seen many a year and I would prefer to raise the mast rather than the lower the crane.
Along the same lines, what’s a NS30C weigh as it sits at the dock? Data sheets say 4.76 tonnes, crane operator said 7.2 tons (dry, wishbone, no mast), registration plate says 10.25 (tons max?). These vary a lot.

That seems high to me. Seem to remember hearing weight is more like 350 lbs but not sure of source.

I put the mast in the 300 lb range. BIANKA weighed 16,000 lbs in the sling.

16,000 pounds! 16,000 pounds! That is eight tons or 7.27 metric tons. Good thing that electric motor is so light. Of course La Reina comes in at 9500 to 10000 pounds when lifted, not the 8500 shown in the brochure.

Might be apocryphal, but I read somewhere that the design displacement of the 30 was ~11,500 pounds but George Hinterhoeller refused to build them that skinny so most of them came out of the shop several thousand pounds more than that.

The calculated weight of the spar (AKA mast) is 150kg or 350lbs. Attached are the calculations, using online calculators. This is lower than calculating by hand (226kg) so I will ask the crane operator tomorrow, assuming he doesn’t get all uppity again.

Perhaps you haven’t allowed for the sleeve inside.

Our 26 comes in at 9500 plus boom, mast, water and ships stores... my guess is that we leave the dock at 10500

The brochure for the 324 states the the carbon fibre mast on the 324 saves 200 lbs. I am thinking the aluminium would be in 500 to 600 lb range. Tartan claims their carbon fibre mast weighs 50% less then aluminium. I have read numbers ranging from 20% to 50% in weight savings. If carbon saves 50% or 200 lbs the the aluminium would weigh 400 lbs. If it only saves 20% the the aluminium 30 mast would be 1000 lbs. which seems high to me. That is why I am thinking 500 to 600 lbs with 400 at the lowest.

I asked Mike Quill about a NS30 spar, he says “The tubes only weight is listed at 232 lbs. I would add another 125 lbs for hardware, castings etc”. That is 357 lbs (162kg) which is in the calculated range.

Danny at Klacko Spars says “The tube weight from manufacturing estimated 384 and easy to add another 100 lbs for hardware. so a complete rig you are about 500 lbs”. The plot thickens.

I don’t think the estimates are quite that accurate. More like somewhere between not too heavy and way too heavy, give or take a lot. I think we can reliably assume the mast and boom weight less then the complete boat.

I have noticed that the mast gets heavier every year when I pull it and then put it back in the spring.

It does give me a chance to inspect it, give it preventive maintenance and be confident out on the water that it will take heavy weather in stride…
