Hi Gang, I need the advice and experience you can supply me in the search for an more equitable rating for my Nonsuch 30, El Faro, which is currently 180, the same as a main and jib J/22. This rating is vastly disadvantageous here in Baltimore where the wind runs around 3 to 5 knots most days in the summer.
That’s what mine is in Eastern NC. Not happy about it and glad that I’m not competing against any “J” Boats. However, since I’ve come in first in my division (168 and above) the last four years, I have trouble convincing the local ratings people.

My phrf rating in New England Fleet is 177. There are no J22’s racing in the same division but there are some older Pearson’s in the 30 foot range that appear to be far faster than the higher rating.

PHRF ratings fall apart when boats are of different types. They only work when boats are of similar design. You will never compete in light airs against light boats, no matter what the rating is.
