Polyethylene Tanks

Easy question….
Did Hinterholler ever install polyethylene tanks in new boats and if so when did they switch over from Aluminium?
….. or were the a water tanks always plastic?

Thanks,

I believe my tanks are original from 1984 and poly.

I have Nonsuch (1978) and they are plastic.

My NS3U #404 1987 are all aluminum.
Except head.

Thanks. Mine (polyethylene) look original but I’ve seen posts on the forum about aluminium. Was that just fuel and waste?
I’ve been tracing a fresh water leak lately and one of the things I found was that the pvc hose adapters for the fillers on both water tanks had their barbs sanded off and were leaking. I would not be surprised to find that that was done at the factory but was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt if they weren’t original. I’ve replaced both the adapters and hoses now and those leaks are gone but I’m left with a tiny seepage from the aft tank that is definitely not coming from any fitting or hose. Anyone else had this?

In my humble opinion the original tanks were aluminum.

Our 1987 30 Ultra had aluminum tanks all around. We bought the boat new in '87. We replaced the water tanks and holding tank as they were pitted and started to leak. The replacement tanks were poly and obtained through the INA program.

Our 1987 also has aluminum tanks

Paul,

Mine were all aluminum on both my NSes. All replaced with poly.

Interesting, I found a lot of the barbs on some of my plumbing on the NS36 sanded down too. But I suspect the PO did that, not the factory. It would have been harder to sand them down than just use a hot air gun to heat up the hose (and do it right!) - especially if your job at the factory is to install the plumbing!

Hi Bob, the barbs were sanded down on our original aluminum tanks and we’ve been the only owner of “Alpha Waves”. This was definitely done by the factory.

What a shame!

As I said, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was done at the factory. I’ve found worse things than this that were definitely done there. There seems to be a disconnect between the fibreglass work which is absolutely top notch IMHO and the outfitting which is in some cases unbelievably badly done.

One very neat Hinterhoeller feature is that you ca easily remove the tanks, the covers are big enough. This lets you take one out for repair or leak testing. I
had a Bristol 45.5, wonderful boat but tanks were below floor level and you literally had to disassemble the interior (it was a stick-built interior) to get them out. Tanks were lovely stainless but eventually do leak.

My three fresh water tanks are all aluminium.
