Propane Line Cap

Looking for a little advice. We’ve removed the cooker on our 30U and i want to cap the line. The fitting appears to be 3/8” but not so sure what the thread is. Tried 3/8 MIP from Lowes but very stiff and don’t want to force it.

Looked in the 30U manual but only see the schematic. Anyone in the NS universe know the correct size/thread?

Thanks, Neil

Neil,

Propane safety standards have evolved since the boats were built and now call for having no tees, splits, or capped lines – only direct lines from the propane locker to a single device, one line per device, any tees or splits kept inside a properly vented locker.

I know it’d be a lot cheaper to find a cap of the right thread size, but the safe thing to do is to run a new direct line to your remaining equipment.

Sorry, I know that may not be what you wanted to hear.

Thanks, Bob, as always for your wise words. It would be appropriate at this point to say “think electric” because that is where we are going - at least on the house side.

My intention is to decommission the propane system but leave it in place so that it can be recovered/updated by a future owner.

So, my question still stands: what’s the right plug for the hose ?

Cheers, Neil

Neil; Lots of propane lines are left-hand threads. You can usually tell a left-hand threaded nut because it will have “witness” marks on it; on the hex nut, the “top-middle” will have a witness mark, usually looking like a machining error.

All combustible gasses like that have left-hand threads, so one can not mis-connect them with other hoses.

As Bob says, remove the hose, simplify the layout.

In our 26, the previous owners, when the propane was re-done, ran 3 propane lines from a manifold in the propane locker, to the stove, CAT heater, and a hot-water heater. Then they removed the propane catalytic air heater, and correctly disconnected (and plugged) the ends in the locker, and at the end of the line where the CAT heater was.

Many thanks John. That makes sense and I’ll look for the LH plug.

We have decommissioned the propane system but will leave it in place to leave the option for the next owner.

We have, however, removed the cooker and have a custom built 4-drawer unit ready to install (hopefully to increase our beer and wine carrying capacity although I will likely defer to the crew-chief if she has different plans).

Cheers, Neil

Neil; Sorry for the vague information; I’m out of town for a bit so the boat is not at hand.

Marine Outfitters in Kingston might be able to help, or if you can identify the plug size (and whether it is left-handed thread or normal right-handed) then go to a propane/gas supplier, google “propane hose and supplies kingston ontario” (or something equivalent) and see what pops up.

If you google for a stove (hillerange is one name I remember) it may tell you the hose size in the instruction manual, and hopefully if it’s LH or RH thread.

Hmmm - more beer and wine aboard - I’ll know which boat to follow to an anchorage!

I stripped the original propane system out of our 30U and had a manifold made for the propane locker with valves for each of the three lines allowing me to better trouble shoot any leaks (we have had none) and to just turn off the gas to the heater which is never used in the summer. Besides separate lines to each appliance, I believe the current standards require a “sniffer” that tests the bilge and only if it is OK turns on the relay to allow gas to flow. If you are going to keep any propane appliances, I suggest you consider adding that as well. We turned the original power relay switch that was over the stove into the power breaker for the propane system which simplified things.

As far as increasing storage space for beer and wine, we took out our holding tank and put in an Airhead. Can easily put three cases of beer where the holding tank was . . .
