Replacement of the mixing elbow on my nine year old Yanmar 30

I have owned my yanmar 30 for nine years. is it time to replace the mixing elbow?

I had a Yanmar 2QM on my prior boat, a 1974 Cal3-30, for which I had to replace the mixing elbow. The elbow was cast iron, but there was a casting/machining defect on the adapter plate between the elbow and the exhaust manifold. That caused a salt water leak which caused enough corrosion that the elbow rusted completely through as a crack (should have photographed it). But if that hadn’t happened, that elbow would still be on there today.

I say inspect it, decarbonize it, (and the manifold) and don’t worry, as long as it looks solid inside and out. I used a hacksaw blade to cut and scrape out the carbon. Not a bad idea to buy spares of the manifold and the mixing elbow if you can find them before they dissapear.

Thanks. I have decided to replace it. All the folks in my Nonsuch group ( Pacific Northwest) think it is a good idea.dave

Replacing it is unlikely to be a bad idea. Unless it’s badly rotted out, I’d keep the old one as a spare, though.
