I don't know if it was 25 years of the wishbone tapping the cheek
block on the mast of the Puffin (Nonsuch 22, hull #55), but the block
that runs the choker line from the aft end of the wishbone down the
mast fell apart while I was crossing a ferry wake in the San Juan
Islands last week.
The four screws were unbelievably tight - even with an impact driver,
two of them sheared! But eventually I got all four out. The brand on
the cheek block is Garhauer. Nobody seems to carry them here in
Victoria. Other cheek block models do not have the screw holes in the
right spots and I suspect that Garhauer might be higher quality than
many of the others.
Any suggestions on whether I should hold out for Garhauer or try to
customize another brand? Any tips on installation of the replacement
cheek block?
I replaced that block several years ago with a swiveling one, fabricated by
Murray Cressman, which provides a fairer lead when broad reaching or
running. I believe there is a link to his products on the INA website. You
should also be able to obtain an exact replacement for the original block
from Murray, Mike Quill (also linked to from the INA websitge) or directly
from Garhauer. I have had excellent results dealing with all of them. Good
luck.

By way of Cc to Mike Quill I trust he may be able to help you with a
replacement, I know he carries a replacement chocker cheek block. Here's his
website: www.mqyr.com, and email: mquill@cogeco.ca.

Check with Mike Quill and Murray Cressman
One of them offers a swinging block which fits the hole pattern of the cheek
block on the NS 30C and hopefully also fits the pattern on your boat.
I’m about to put a new block on my new mast to take the choker line. Rather than try and replace it with a customised cheek block I’m going to attach an eye to the mast and hang a standard block from that. One advantage of this arrangement is the block will always be in line with the choker line.
