Self tailing winch

Hi folks, my winch isn’t cranking at all so I decided to pull it apart to see what was going on. Took off the first ring and the top washer came off. So far so good. Then looking for the next ring, and the entire post is off kilter. Can’t access the second ring. What now?!

You have to take the self tailer off. Then the drum can be lifted off.

The problem is it’s off kilter and I can’t access the ring to be able to take it off. Have a close look at the pictures.

Maybe the set screws need to be screwed down to release the self tailer? It should just come straight off.

My understanding is that there are two rings that need to come off before anything else will come apart.

If the winch came with the boat, you should have a manual. If not, Google it. If you've removed the first clip, that ear should come straight up. Soak it and then tap on it to free it. After that, the drum will lift off.

Just did all mine. Each one is easier and quicker than the last.

My original post has 3 pictures. They show pretty clearly how off centre the shaft is. That off centered post is what is hiding the second clip (the keychain type locking ring).

Val,
Go to the INA website and go to the sections on Manuals. The 26C manual at pages 80 and 81 has the parts list and the disassembly instructions for the self tailing Barient No. 10 winch.

Ye of little faith (that’s me) I honestly didn’t think the no 10 was exploded in a graphic in the manual. That’s exactly what I was looking for. Thank you Mark!
